Soooooooooo...I've always wanted to articulate a skeleton and have been doing some reading/research on the process and as we were driving yesterday we happened upon...a freshly dead (hit by car) BADGER!...most people start small...squirrels, cats...but oh no...I got it in my brain that I MUST have said badger so we picked him up and took him to my clinic (my boss is awesome and let me use the wet tables for this)...a couple friends and I spent 3.5 hours skinning/defleshing said badger so I can have his bones...we still have a ways to go but we finishd at midnight and were all pretty tired...there is significant skull damage (duh...badger vs car = dead badger) but from what we could tell no other bones were broken amazingly enough...no bruising and organs were intact. ANYWHO...I took a bunch of photos that I may or may not share but I thought someone here might get a kick out of this :rolleyes: :uhoh:
 
Funny that you mention this. I was talking to my husband the other night. I asked him if after our cat Cheetah dies, can we get the skeleton articulated for display. Cheetah is about 11 yrs old.

I would probably use beetles to clean the bones. Not sure I could deflesh them myself. My dad loves to do his elk antlers English mounted. So he will bury the head for months.
 
Lol...I will post pics this afternoon :) I work in a clinic so we do necropsies and surgeries and the like so flesh and blood and whatnot doesn't bother me (otherwise I couldn't do it lol)
 
Yes! Pics or it didn't happen!! I would love to articulate a skeleton. I have a whole coyote skeleton, but I made it into a dream catcher. I'd love to learn how to articulate one :)
 
I say share them! I am a taxidermist so I dont really worry about the bones, but I have always wanted to try to do a skeleton and I have a few in the freezer but I dont think I will have the patience to get through it. Its great only the skull was damaged and they can fit back together pretty well from ones I have seen. Good luck and have fun!
 
komodo: I was tempted to keep his pelt but it was INFESTED with ticks and ants *shudder* so we threw it out...perhaps the next creature I come about will be salvageable :)

Wow, I'm also morbidly curious and wanting more pictures. That's just insanely awesome. Too bad the pelt wasn't salvageable. Can't wait to see how it turns out
 
So creeped out right now but ya know what, fair play to you! A lot of people wouldn't have the guts, excuse the pun.
 
I assist with surgeries and the occasional necropsy at my clinic so blood and guts doesn't bother me. I have a pretty strong stomach :) One of my assistants almost lost it while we were removing the guts and I kept telling her to just breath through her mouth...she apologized for getting "all girly" on me lol.
