We decided to breed our own.

I dont think we will need to worry about that. They were pretty busy going at it on the car ride home.

So an update for everyone. We have three mice that were likely ALREADY pregnant that are probably 4-5 days from birth. Our males are doing their diligence just the same. Our rats are a bit different, one female is a tad young yet to be pregnant but the male still take interest in her every few days as she cycles. The other female is pregnant now, she's not quite belly dragging yet but she's gotten plump on the back end. Also noted as the male doesn't take particular interest in her right now. So we have a week or so before we've got babies, and another week or two before we have feeders.

P.S. if you start a colony, prepurchase your feeders (not the breeders) for a two month supply, we only bought 6 and should have bought 20.

We have baby rats! All 11 of them are healthy looking and squeeking away. And it looks like the one female going into labor (black one) and having the baby rats is making the other pregnant female (black and white one) consider the same thing.
The black female even hoarded some food near her little litter so she wouldnt have to go far while nursing them.
And of course the male is running around all excited making happy rat noises.

First, Congrats on the babies..... The male squeaking, means he is ready to knock up the ladies again...(not a bad thing if your mass producing) About the time these are ready to be weaned the ladies should be ready to give birth again. Make sure when she does give birth that the weanlings dont take all the milk from the mom. You could lose a litter that way(happened to me) I remove the weanling when mom is real plump.

Oh we wont have that problem. We have 8 snakes to feed! Once they are ready to be eating on their own we have a separate container to put them in. We do have another female rat that has been starting to show the signs of being ready to have her babies also. Shes gotten HUGE.
