Website Creating Software for Morons....is there any?

starsevol

Cohabbing is cruelty...
I'm trying to create a decent looking website. I know NOTHING about this stuff. I have been working with netobjects fusion, and I "almost" have it, but I am getting constant script errors on my computer, and all updates between computers are inconsistant. I want a website I can update myself, from any computer.

I am willing to spend a coupla hundred dollars on software I can actually USE....but don't want to buy something that is going to give me problems.

Any suggestions?

Beth, you could install a content management system on your web server and update the content yourself. I'd be more than willing to do the "templating" (i.e. the visual interface) for you.

The problem with most "bundled" solutions is that they'll never keep up with the changes in platforms, technologies, and the "fluidity" of change on the web. They're designed for a one shot, one time, static kind of solution.

Which is why I have a job. :p

Let me know.

Dale

Beth, I don't know if it will work for you, but I use WordPress.org blogging software for my site. It makes it SUPER easy to update your site, even daily if you wish, with little trouble. There are TONS of free "plug-ins" and templates available to help your site look and operate the way you want, and it also supports CSS editing, to create your own templates...if you know how, which I do not.

Anyhow...the software is FREE to download from WordPress.org, and once you upload the software to your server, you just start putting pages and posts together. You can use either a static page or the most recent posts for your "front page", and you can easily update anytime you want.

Just an idea. When I first heard about it, I was VERY skeptical about using "blogging" software for developing a site, but it really is good software and is incredibly easy to use and intuitive...

Thank you Dale and Chris!
And Chris, that sounds pretty good (although you are FAR from a moron)!
Of course, you know now I MUST check out your site.
Thank you so much :)

Both of my sites are using this software...KingofColubrids.com and InterruptedThoughProcess.wordpress.com.

I have KingofColubrids.com set up with static pages as the main site, and I use posts to update availability and make announcements. I use the sidebar links to navigate. For my personal/photo blog, I have it set so that the static pages are "behind the scenes", where people can find out about me and all that jazz, but I use the most recent posts up front, so the site is ALWAYS updating and changing, creating RSS feeds automatically, and drawing in more search bots with every new post.

Check them both out, and you will get a feel for how the two options can be worked, and probably even get some better ideas of your own.

Just an FYI...KoC.com is hosted on a private server, so I use plug-ins to get traffic reports, and photo galleries and stuff. ITP is hjopsted at worpress.com, so it has less "features" available to me, but still makes an easy-to-update photo blog site.

Chris, Wow, you're a cutiepie!
Is it hard to put pictures on Wordpress?

Well...my KoC site is using an older version of the software, and getting photos in place takes some effort. I use the upload feature with the software to get my pictures on the server, than hand-code the <IMG SRC> HTML to put the pictures in.

With the newer software, it *should* automatically insert your pictures into your pages while uploading at sizes you specify and alignment you specify.

I too would like to start a website for a side business venture, but I am totally incompetent and computer illiterate. I have no idea what CSS is or many other terms involved. I know what a server is, but have no idea how to get one. I am also on a very tight budget, so that doesn't help. I was wondering if any of the web-based easy websites would work for me, but have no clue where to start.

Start at WordPress.com. It is 100% free to signup and start "blogging" your site immediately. As your site grows and, hopefully, your profit margins, you can either register a full domain through Wordpress, or transfer your site to a server...when you figure out how. You can choose your own sub-domain, and the URL will be "YourChosenDomain.WordPress.com", until/unless you register a domain, than it will be "Your ChosenDomain.com"

I can't help you with the server thing...My friend has a server, and my KoC site is hosted by him. He's a tech-geek, and does all the hard stuff for me...

I use freewebs.com . It's great for a programming moron like me!

I host my site through them. Robbie's Corn Field.

When I used to have a web page running I used microsoft frontpage (because it came free with my computer at that time and I had previous experience with frontpage). It's wysiwyg which suits me, because I know very limited computer language...though if I recall frontpage is no longer being produced and was replaced by something else similar.

Well, right now the old man is downloading the microsoft software for me. We will try the 30 day trial...
But webs.com looks easy to use, even though the tooth whitening ad doesn't do much for me! I told him that if we don't find something he is satisfied with (note I said "he" LOL), by the time the eggs hatch, then I will just use webs.com

I've checked out Robbie's and Jen's sites and that program seems to do what I need.

Did I mention it's super easy to use, too? :D

Just once or twice!
I liked your site alot, I never knew you and Tony did removals.
A couple of "Todd Hardwicks" you are!

I wonder if I should see what David "the master" has to say. Maybe he's a "webmaster" too!

Nah, he's just a forum master. LOL. I'm the one that does the removals (if anyone actually calls :poke: ). I'm waiting for my neighbors to see the pygmy rattlesnake they swear lives under their house again. When they do, I'm set to go get it.

Hey I saw that pic!
You could take a gator, easy!

(If the old man can't find software to suit him...I mean me....and I use webs.com, you'd give me pointers maybe?)
