they dont have a motley or stripe pattern.. I am very suprised that it is not possible for them to carry both genes...

They can carry both, but only in heterozygous form...and like Susan said, in which case it would be showing some form of a motley/stripe pattern.
This is because motley and stripe are found on the same locus.
++ =Wild Type
+m =het motley (visual normal)
+s =het stripe (visual normal)
mm =motley (visual)
ss =stripe (visual)
ms = "motley het stripe" (het for both stripe and motley, visual motley/stripe patterning)
you cannot have +m+s, mms, ssm, ssmm, etc...
