What is a snake farm??

Addict!
I keep reading about farm bred animals, what are those?
Is it a bunch of snakes on a closed off piece of land? How does this work?
I'm just wondering.

I THINK that it is a breeder who has thousands of breeder snakes and so these animals will most likely have hidden hets.(kind of like Serpenco)

I think you are right. I know a lot of "dinker" ball pythons come from a huge snake farm in Ghana, it's where we got a lot of cool genetics from that lead to balls like pieds :)
I'm not sure however if it is on an open piece of land where eggs are collected, or if it is like we have here with rack systems.

They're where wild-caught gravid females are captured and their offspring (live bearers) or eggs (egg layers) are effectively "born" in captivity. I believe the females are released back into the wild after they've produced.

This type of operation has a pretty poor rep for not making sure that their snakes are parasite or disease-free, or are even eating. They are bulk distributors who deal in quantity rather than quality.

They shouldn't be mixed up with reputable captive breeders (such as Serpenco used to be, before Rich Z retired and sold his stock), who ensure that all the animals they produce are healthy and reliably eating. They will also know the parentage of their animals.

Rich, I am sorry I mixed that up.
Bitsy, thanks for clarifying that.
