what is this?

This was on my back porch. Anybody have an idea as to what it is? Looks like it might be a bird, or a gigantic spider? It's about 5 inches wide. Maybe two birds? No idea.

I poked it with a long piece of PVC pipe. Two long-beaked birds flew away. Don't know what they were. Maybe about 3 inches tall, with a longer beak, over an inch.

My guess was huddled birds.... I can see the confusion of appearance though!

Those look to be either whip-poor-wills or chuck-will's-widows. Initially, I thought perhaps screech owls, until you mentioned a longer beak.
