so today i wet into my local pet store and i met met a young man who had caught a strange snake.he was there trying to have it identified and well know one there knew and neither did i . but it does look very colubrid. i talk to him about buying it and i may purchase it Monday but i wanted to have it identified first. the snake is a dark grey color with dark red blotches/bands? . if its a band pattern its not very consistent. i wish i had better photos but i didn't think at the time to take them so i had him send me some through txt. so what could this be buy the way it was caught in Colbert county Alabama. which is in the north west region. there are many kings, corn, rats and Ive heard milk snakes here but i have no clue what this is

My best guess is some type of rat snake. The head is not shaped like a king's and milk snakes live in the Southwest and Mexico.

That's a young Racer. I'm 99% positive. The head shape and big eyes gives it away.

Oh yeah that is a racer. They can be difficult to establish in captivity. My father in law had a couple and 1 just never did well so he released it. I would check into your local laws before you decide to keep him. I am not sure what yours are but I know some states it is illegal to keep a wild snake and like here. We can keep them but we can't sell them.

I'd agree with racer. Unless he's already gotten it to eat in captivity, I wouldn't buy it. I would also recommend the guy release it back into the wild unless he's had it in his possession for a long time.

Yeah, racer. I'm surprised it's not biting your hand......

We have those everywhere around here and it looks like a racer. The pics are poor so its hard to tell. They dont make good pets.Nervous, bitey and fast.
