When to worry?

I've been reading the posts on egg-binding to get an idea of whether or not I have a problem. My female is about 7 years old. This is the first breeding with my male (who is also 7) and my first breeding experience, though the female has been bred before. She shed about 9 or 10 days ago and Friday layed one egg. It looked like a slug (yellowish and not plump). Saturday, she layed two more eggs that looked like slugs as well. I candled them and saw no veins, but maybe now I'm not sure since Hurley said three of her slugs pipped. Anyway, female has refused food for about three weeks now, though she looks strong and active. I tried "exercising" her during her pregnancy and tried manipulating the eggs this weekend to no avail. I am afraid to push too hard, though nothing seems to be getting to the cloaca anyway. I check on her twice a day and maybe that is too much stress. I put in an additional lay box, though she laid the first three egs in her original box just fine. I will try giving her a warm bath tonight. All that being said- it has been three days from the first egg, so how much longer do I wait before calling the vet?

It really depends on the situation. Chances are, if the snake has only laid slugs so far, then after three days all you probably are going to get are more slugs. Good eggs will usually all come within about 2 days. I don't know if this is what is happening with your snake, but I had a small blizzard that was not bred this year that laid about one slug per day for about a week.

When I have had an egg-bound snake, It has been obvious due to the size of the egg and the tightly stretched skin on the snake around the egg. So if your snake is not egg bound, then If it were me, I would just wait awhile longer.

I would give her a little more time before starting to consider egg-binding. Most of my females didn't lay their clutches until at least day 8 post-shed. Some have gone up to day 12 post-shed. I have had some females lay a few slugs several days prior to, and several days after. they lay their clutch of fertile eggs. One female had all slugs and laid them over a 7 day period. Another female laid 2 fertile eggs, then waited 2 days, laid 8 more, waited a few more days, then laid 1 egg/day for 3 days. The last egg was at her vent for 2 more days before I finally intervened and helped her with the last one. It was a total of 13 days from the first egg to the last and they all look pretty good so far, although they were all on the smallish side.

Since the eggs in your female haven't moved down to the vent, most likely, she just isn't quite ready yet. You'll have a better idea what's going on in a day or two and if she needs help.

Feeling more at ease

I'm feeling better reading these responses and about other people's situations. I'll give my gal a warm bath and some exercise tonight. We'll see how she feels in the morning. :)

I found two more eggs last night. They were attached to each other. One had broken and the other was the size of a marble. It looked like a slug. My gal sure is taking her time...
