Oddly enough the only shelters that could keep up with the demand would be those run by PETA. I still find it questionable though.
1) According to government documents, PETA employees have killed more than 19,200 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens since 1998. This behavior continues despite PETA’s moralizing about the “unethical” treatment of animals by farmers, scientists, restaurant owners, circuses, hunters, fishermen, zookeepers, and countless other Americans. PETA puts to death over 90 percent of the animals it accepts from members of the public who expect the group to make a reasonable attempt to find them adoptive homes. PETA holds absolutely no open-adoption shelter hours at its Norfolk, VA headquarters, choosing instead to spend part of its $32 million annual income on a contract with a crematory service to periodically empty hundreds of animal bodies from its large walk-in freezer. (bold and italics are mine)
That does not sound like they are "treating animals with respect and dignity and preventing unnecessary cruelty to them.". But they do sound VERY hypocritical to me. I find it impossible to believe that more than 90% of the rescues are unadoptable. But they wouldn't know, since they don't have any open hours. Nothing admirable at all, in my opinion.
Question for you, or anyone really, is there a defined difference between animal rights and animals welfare? If so, are you a "rights-y" or a "welfare-y"?
No support for PETA from me I'm afraid. These are the depths they've sunk to in the UK:

Pike Place Market here in Seattle is known for their fresh fish catch every day and is also known for the 'fish toss', where the workers toss the fish in the air to each other as they are selecting and wrapping them.
Off topic, but...
At 2 different places I worked we had to watch some employee motivation video that revolved around this Pike Place fish market.
It was the "FISH" philosphy, or something like that. I forget what FISH stood for.

I've heard horror stories from Ocean Spray employees that make me never want to drink Cranberry Juice again, for instance.
I don't hate them. They have a good message about treating animals with respect and dignity and preventing unnecessary cruelty to them.
That being said, that message and goal has definitely been perverted and been overrun by a more radical agenda. So in that regard they're failing. And until they take a more pragmatic view on some things and purge the radical elements, then they will come off as a radical group; which to a certain extent they've become.
But I see nothing hypocritical about humanely euthanizing animals they've rescued. Unfortunately many of these animals are so abused that they can't be adopted out. So they have to be put down. In a lot cases I think that is probably better than being left in the conditions they were previously being kept in.
Hey.. Jessiecat... could you PM me some of those horror stories? I drink a lot of cranberry juice and now you have me slightly worried...
Back on subject, is it PETA who does all those undercover videos to show how this company or that company abuses animals? I remember when I was 12 or so, I saw an undercover video about IAMS where it showed they cut out the meat on a bunch of dogs' hind legs, the thigh I guess, and put it in the dog food. I've never bought IAMS since, even though I know it's highly unlikely that the video was true. Was that a PETA video?
