Though I know advocating buying petstore snakes isn't wise, I do still think even petstore snakes need love too. I got my Snow, Var, from a Petco, and I admit the conditions of the snakes weren't commendable. Most were very thin, some had stuck shed on them, and some even appeared dehydrated. I guess I just felt like i was saving one from that life and could give her a good one. She has thrived beautifully ever since, eats wonderfully, and is a very healthy snake. Truth is, I know I probably just got lucky, and that I can't save all the petstore animals I'd like to. But I'm happy to have given one a good life as opposed to possibly growing up in the store in one tiny enclosure, with other multiple grown snakes, that nobody wants, because most people want a cute little hatchling. I visited a Petsmart last week searching for some viv supplies while I was in the area, and I have to say all of their reptiles appeared in very good condition, which I was very greatful to see. The man in charge of the reptiles was very knowledgable & informed, and was a snake owner of several species himself. (I couldn't resist holding a few snakes while I was there, and conversing with him about our pets.) Because the snakes from petstores come from "snake mills", many of them may be inbred, or have otherwise genetic disorders their born with, so dont feel bad Holly, there's probably nothing you could've done. Sorry for your loss, and good luck with your new scaley friend. =]
