It's Jager time!
My poor pudy cat is looking awful. Shes been looking scabby for a few weeks now. I thought it was just the fleas (which is being treated). Shes constantly got flees and worms due to being an outdoor cat, but she is treated like clockwork every 3 months for each.

Shes also not been spayed. Shes too old now I think (13) therefore shes been attracting all the toms in the country it seems. Poor thing. I keep her inside when shes in heat to stop the toms fighting with her and constantly trying to mate.

Anyway, shes been off her food for a few days. She was offered beautiful chicken last night and didn't touch it. Not like this greedy guts at all. Shes got some scabs on her back, a big bloated tummy (I'm guessing shes riddled with tape worm) and shes overly vocal. We call her the silent kitty because she never meows unless theres something wrong.

Shes been booked into the vets first thing monday morning. I feel sort of embarrassed about taking her in. I am sure they will ask why she hasn't been spayed if we are having tom problems. Well, before I moved she was still an outdoor cat, but there were no other males around at all! I utterly regret that descision now and fear it may be too late for her.

Shes miserable and I hate to see my baby gal look so down :(

Wish us luck for Monday...

Poor kitty. Cats are experts at making miraculous comebacks, though. I've seen it over and over again. Outdoor cats are tough- they have a hard life, but are truely unhappy confined in the house. I hope she's ok.

Your right Nanci, she is MISERABLE in the house (unless it's snowing outside, then she loves curling up under my heater). She has fields to play in and rivers to drink from and birds to catch. Although shes extremely loyal and never strays too far and always comes immediatley when called. Shes truley my gal and I adore her.

This will be her first vet check in 10 years. I am a little embarrassed about that too...

As long as she is healthy in other ways, I don't think the vet will deny her being spayed. I'm not sure of the symptoms but have you had her checked(blood taken) for FLV and FIV? Good luck to you and her on monday and know she is in my prayers over the weekend.

BTW. I just had my male tested for FLV. And they had to put the stinker UNDER to draw his blood as he would have NOTHING to do with it.. LOL. You could hear him 3 miles away I think from all the ruckus he was making until they put him under.

I'm not sure how she will react to the vet, shes not been in over 10 years. Shes friendly and quiet. She always takes flee and worm treatment with ease, it doesn't phase her. However she does HATE the cat carry case...

Good luck Elle and little pretty kitty. Hope it all goes well. Don't let them give you a guilt trip, Elle. *hugs*

Oh I won't. Shes been perfectly fine until now. I honestly think it's a really bad case of tape worm (amongst others). Something she needs vet treatment for. Most commercial treatments aren't for tape worm so I have probably not been treating the real problem for a while now.

I'm such a bad cat mum...

Oh and despite the fact shes the village bike (everyones had a ride) shes never had kittens. I have never got to the route of that problem, but I am glad shes not able to have them. Perhaps the vet can shed some light on that too....

Do not blame yourself Elle, cats are very good at hiding problems but at least shes letting you know now good luck and I agree dont let them make you feel bad, her life styles not hurt her after 13 years so why fix it

Dont be ashamed at all! We had a 16 year old blue heeler that died just a few weeks ago that has been to the vet 3 times...once when she was a puppy to get spayed, then when we moved from the country to the city we had to get a rabbies shot( her first and last one mind you, she has been in many scruffs with coyotes, foxes and skunks..(eww) she has also killed a few) the last one was to be put down and cremated. That is nothing to be ashamed of at all!! People don't give enough credit to animals anymore...there much hardier than most think!

The fact that she is an outdoor cat and has lived for 13 years is quite an accomplishment, she must be a true fighter. 6-8 years is the average lifespan for an outdoor kitty.

Good Luck Elle. Give her a good scratch behind the ears for me.

Hope she's ok Elle. My old tabby was the same, about 4 vet visits in her life, she had a badly broken leg that was pinned and plated as a youngster, then never needed the vet until her final visit. I had my kittens treated for tapeworm because I know their mother was catching rabbit kits for them, if your girl's been catching her own snacks that could be one of her problems. Good luck puss.

Oh she sure does catch her own dinner. Especially when I sometimes "forget" to feed her. I need to forget on purpose so that she KNOWS this is her home, and she will always be fed, as long as she comes back when shes really hungry. We have a huge bunny, bird and moose population, I was blessed with baby bunneh heads galore this summer. For an old gal shes still got it in her eh ;)

Thanks for the good luck wishes everyone, shes perked up in the last couple of days but shes missing some patches of fur now... AHHHH!

The loss of fur may be due to ringworm. It's a nasty little fungus that my wife had to dealt with earlier this year. We first realized the problem when my health indoor cat began loosing fur on his ears and his back. Ringworm is not dangerous it's just unsightly and will go away even without treatment in about 6 months. With a topical and oral regiment you can eliminate the fungus in about 4 weeks.
