The Crazy Alaskan
This Cow Moose and her calf :D

They keep coming back to eat off the siberian pea bush, they love it.

In the first pic you cant really tell but her lips were above the edge of the roof.

Sorry for the messy yard haha.

Oooh, nice. I'd always thought about moving to Alaska, but I don't think I'd be able to now with my joint problems.

I was about 15 feet away from them. I did use the zoom a little but the porch is only about 18 feet long. These ones arent that scared of people if you coulnd tell. I chased them off 3 times this morning.

Neat pix! I have a friend who, when she lived in Alaska, told many stories of the moose sticking their heads in through the windows. Even the males with big antlers would give it a try. Luckily, they never succeeded, or they probably wouldn't have been able to get back out!

I love seeing photos like this. Thank you so much for sharing, and brightening my day :).

Ya I know skully has been begging me for pictures for a while but hadnt really gotten any good ones. I knew it was just a matter of time before they tried to eat my bush again haha. I am kinda wondering where the other calf is. That cow has 2 calves and she wasnt around. Im thinking she may have been hit by a car or something. The only calf I have seen with her lately is the young bull in the picture. You cant tell but he is getting little bitty tiny nubs pushing up his skin so he should be leaving her this summer.

I've been waiting to see some great Moose shots from you!!

Awesome images, that must be amazing to behold such animals in your own yard. I hope the Moose and her calf make it though the year!

Well the calf is a bull, so his chances are slimmer since next year he will be legal to hunt but if he can make it past that year ( his spike/fork stage) he will be not legal to hunt till he is big bull and have a huge rack (50 inches or wider or 3 brow tines) so its a 50/50 for him.

We loose alot of moose around here to being hit by cars. On average there are 200-500 moose hit per year, and almost all are dead or have to be put down but a few do make it and run off.

And yes it is really cool to see them, my kids were having a hay day watching them. This cow though seems pretty use to dogs, as you can see my dog was right there and she wasnt to threatened. I actually had fired a shot off in the air with my shot gun earlier this year because she was going for my other dog but now she seems to ignore them most of the time. She did drop her head and raise her hair though which is a sign she was about to charge so I beat on the wall and yellled at the top of my lungs and she ran off......5 minutes later she was back eating again.

Fearless mom... with a bull calf? Keep those shotgun shells nearby. A few thousand angry pounds with a giant rack coming at you or your dog can't be fun.

No its not, I thought she was ganna kill my pittbull when she went after him, had I not fired off that shot I think she would have. And a cow with a calf is a VERY defensive and dangerous animal! Honostly, I dont know which is more dangerous, a cow moose with a calf or a sow bear with a cub.

Doesn't matter. Both are many times the size of us or the dogs we keep. Although, bears have claws and very mobile hands... at least with a moose you could try grabbing onto the head/neck/shoulder and do your best to avoid being trampled.

well, unlike a horse a moose can kick side ways so no getting around it that way. and that mooses back is around 6feet off the ground so I doubt any one would be able to get there arms around there neck since they usually rear up when they tromple people. Both are fast and powerfull so either way you would be screwed, I would be lying if I said I wasnt wathing my butt when I stepped out to take those pictures lol.

Ohhhhh we have alot of Moose around here as well....I just love them! Having a mama and her baby eating your tree in the morning is the perfect way to wake up!

Here's a nice Bull watching hubby BBQ in the rain, LOL

This calf was watching my boys skateboard last Summer until a car came and scared her off. We believe her Mom was hit by a car :(

What kind of bears do you all have there?

We have black bears....they even come up onto our deck and watch us through the windows, LOL

I have lots of pics of them as well but don't want to completly hijack your thread.

How beautiful!

I get deer coming through my yard this time of year. Yesterday, there was a group of 5 laying in the back yard, chilling.

The neighbors get angry because they eat their plants, but I think it is worth it for the cuteness!!

Way up north we have polar bears, but down where Im at we have black and brown bears. More attacks by grizzlys but its usually do to people fishing in the same areas. But what most people dont know is that most grizzly attacks are from the bear thinking it has to defend its cubs or food, with black bear attacks like %50 of the time its from the black bear attacking you as a prey item. How ever it is still pretty rare to be attacked period up here, if you talk and make lots of noise while you are out chances are you will never know there was a bear around unless you see its foot prints or poop.

Those are some nice pictures of that young bull moose :D I think thy look pretty cool when they still have their velvet on there antlers. This last moose hunting season We saw a nice bull ( couldnt tell if he was legal though so we couldnt shoot him) and he still had his velvet, I tried to get pictures since I couldnt harvest him but it was just a tad to dark that morning.

Sad that you think the calf lost its mother to a car accident, it happens alot up here. Its bad for both the person and the moose involved, we have alot of fatalities up here from people hitting moose. smaller vehicles like cars or small trucks take out there legs and they slide right into the cab often right onto the driver or passenger.

I love seeing moose in my yard, but it makes me very nervous when they are next to my dog like that because they can kill a dog with one stomp if they want.

When we lived in texas for a short time we use to see white tail in the field next to the house, they were pretty cool to watch.

Yah there's ALOT of Moose/car collisions here as well. One of my friends hit one and my friend and the Moose's head headbutted. She was in the hospital for a while and she has alot of issues now because of it :(

Bears don't scare me, I abslutely LOVE them, we sit and watch the cubs playing in the apple trees for hours, they're adorable. And generally the minute they see us they run.

I find all of this stuff really interesting. I watched a special on the relationship of the people and wildlife in Alaska hosted by a team that goes out to solve problems. The show mostly focused on Moose, some bears.

Let's just say your backyard doesn't look like my backyard!!

I think this calls for another thread!
