Yet Another Fancy Mouse Post

BTW I just can't feed off a fluffy little white hopper with a red head so I pretty much have to cull them as pinkies. it's getting harder to think of them as snake food, but with recent feeder prices I guess I am going to have to harden my heart a little.

I love my reptiles, but there is something about a little furry mammal that just captures my heart.

I hope to own a few pet rats in the future.

I couldn't resist, hope you don't mind I share them here.

these mice are called "fox" and are very prized for show mice.

Where do you guys get these? Is it just luck of the draw as far as what part of the country you're in? We have no hobbyist/breeders in the Central FL area, at least my searches came up empty.

I bought mine (when i bred mice) from a pet store, i dug through their feeders and fancy mice and found some nice ones, as well as picked some up at reptile shows and off of craigslist.
now i breed dumbo rex rats, which basically i did the same thing to come across them :)

I used to have a ton of black and tan mice. I bought a black and tan mouse and a black and white mouse as babies. At the time I didn't know how to sex them but I soon learned after getting them. I told my mom I had a boy and a girl and needed another tank ASAP before they got old enough to breed. Well she never took me to get another tank and we had a littler of 3 babies. Two black and tan boys and a black and white female.

Well we finally got another tank, but it was too late again. We didn't know mice could get preggers right after having a litter! By time the first litter was weaned we had a litter of 12 babies!!! We had a mix of white, black and white, and black and tan. I named all of them after Dragonball characters lol. I had one little white guy that had one black spot on his forehead. I kept him and gave all the others away. Though I really liked the black and tan ones too. I could only keep the one male.

I've always wanted more rodents just as pets. Now that I'm an adult, there isn't really anything stopping me except for the idea of cleaning their cages.

And just like that, the first momma rat of the new colony popped today. She is caring for them, but doesn't seem to be a natural. She wasn't a good "herder". She left the majority of her litter scattered about the cage and was content sitting on just the one or 2 nearest to her. I let this go for a number of hours hoping she would adjust. She didn't.

I wrestled with messing with them vs. leaving them. Mom was always tame and good with my handling/presence, so I went for it. Made her a shavings nest, gathered the babies and placed them in it. She's over them and nursing properly, but still isnt that OCD momma that yanks the stray back underneath. Thoughts?

coat patterns with spots?

It is fun to grow your own. Especially when you find some fun genetics with different colors, & coat patterns.

These are some grow out babies from a month or so ago.

How did you get the spotted ones? I've never even seen spotted ones before.

:-D I've finally gotten a few silver colored (which people would probably call grey) but I'm excited over these because all I had before was solid black. I even finally got 2 solid white which I'm wondering what in the world since no one is white except the male that I recently got who's brown & white which was no where near those females. LOL

I agree it is much much more fun to grow your own but then I am on the growing end and my daughter is at the feeding end. She's the one with the snakes not me. I too have gotten to the point of wanting to see what coat colors and types I can get but all the fancies here seem pretty much straight forward black, beige, silver, brown, dark grey, and white. I found a brown & white male and bought him instantly. So far no luck with him though. (Either his cage or him have issues right now & I'm not sure which). :-(

I also have mine in clear boxes in the living/dining room so I can watch them. When they're all going it's almost like watching tv. :-D The babies are all so adorable. Usually I end up telling my daughter you can take so & so but not such & such.
