Your Cold and Flu Remedies

pridecity

Patients took over asylum
I am 21 years old and have officially decided that I'll take a flu over a cold any day. I've been battling this cold off and on for a month. It finally came to a head this week and I have the sneezing 100 times daily, runny and stuffy nose, a mild sore throat, and the whole eleven yards.

By last night, I'd rubbed my nose and licked my lips so raw that it hurt to think about blowing my nose, let alone do it. Then I had a brain fart - antibiotic ointment! Just before bed, I rubbed some on my nose and lips and this morning they are safe to touch again!

So, my following cold management regime consists of antibiotic ointment, long hot showers, quick hair drying, water, Gatorade, orange juice, vitamin C pills, Tylenol and Mucinex. All of these are done at least twice a day (more for liquids). I also try to get up and jog in place for a few minutes just to get the blood pumping. I haven't been coughing yet, knock on Macbook, and hope not to. I swear we will never find a cure for the common cold. We'll be able to cure everything else in the world - even jealousy - but never the cold.

What do you do when you have a cold?

Onions, and Garlic....
And Whiskey to lower your body temp to help you sweat...
Doesn't make you any better but it keeps idiots away and you don't care.....

Actually, I hate whiskey, but onions, garlic, chilli and ginger in salads, curry or stir-fry are great for loosening up the mucous and helping your body recover, the ginger helps settle your tummy. Avoid dairy including milk and cheese because they thicken up the snot and phlegm. As told to me by some of my indian nursing friends and now I swear by it.

Susan, you're not allowed to get sick?

I usually try to eat spicier foods as well, but I'm fighting a nasty canker sore too. I'm surprised I'm not drunk from all the mouthwash I've been putting on it. Lol. And I've been craving some yogurt but I know dairy is out. I need Moo Juice!

Go to Walgreens and look for Buckley's cold medicine.... That stuff will clear you up quick. My father tried it on us when we were kids and next time my wife is sick I will be giving her some....LOL... It tastes horrible, but it clears the sinus' fast.

Susan, you're not allowed to get sick?

Nope! I've never called in sick to my current employer since starting in March 1998. I'm not sure they could handle things if I didn't show up when scheduled. Besides, I get an attendance bonus every quarter, ranging from $150 to $300 per quarter which I can't afford not to get. I also get at the beginning of each year 40 hours of sick pay and 40 hours of personal days off when I don't take them the previous year. It all helps when my salary is more than triple that of my husband's (when he has a salary - there were a few years without one). Besides, I still have to do all the work I usually do at home no matter if I don't feel well or not. Heck, I still have to do everything on my birthday and Mother's Day. My only vacation is when I have to go away from home for Daytona and my convention.

Colds? I don't get those, I get sinus infections, so to the doctor!

Flu? Get a vaccine. If you get it, to the doctor!

To hell with OTC stuff. Except for headache medication, Pepto, and the occasional cut, nothing really works well for me unless I double or triple up on it (yet I can barely handle 250mg of Vicodin for a whole day XD).

If you do get a cold, Alka-selzer cold works well for symptoms. Your best bet is to wash your hands a lot, don't put them near your nose or mouth and keep your distance from sick people. That, and good eating and sleeping habits and you won't get sick. As to the flu vaccine, I think it does more harm than good, I never get it and I haven't gotten the flu in 15 years.
My sister is a nurse (yes, the one in the chain mail) and she used to get the flu shot every year, and got the flu every year. She stopped getting a flu shot 8 years ago and hasn't gotten the flu since...

Well, flu shots are just a "weakened" virus that they inject in you, or have you snort... My wife gets the flu really bad every time she took a shot for it... and since she decided against getting them ever again, she has been perfectly healthy, except for a cold...lol

NETI POT NETI POT NETI POT!

i use it directly before i go to bed, to clear everything out so i can get a good sleep. also, drink so much water that you have to pee every 20 minutes. seriously

not sure if it actually makes a difference, but in my head it does.

If the flu shot was just that, I might not have a problem with it, but it also often contains Thimerosal, a form of Mercury used as a preservative, and banned in most european countries, and Squalene which is an adjuvant. It basically kills your immune system so that less virus can be used to "infect" you and get a response. In other words, adding it saves time and money for the drug companies. It has also been shown to cause many autoimmune disorders.
Here's a short article that gives many of my reasons.

Sorry about the detour.

I have never had a flu shot...

but have only had the flu twice in my life (self diagnosed, so who knows?). Once was around 1971 and once around 2001, I think. I can't remember the last time I had a cold, but I think it was around 8 years ago, or so.

But I have ALWAYS had sinus problems, leading to pretty bad sinus headaches since I was a teen. And the neti pot has been a MIRACLE for me! I used to take a lot of antihistamines, but haven't used them more than a couple of times in the past few years - since I started using the neti pot. It only costs about $15 at any drug store. I have gotten a number of friends and relatives to use it when they were stuffed up from colds, allergies, or any other reason. And it worked great for them - for nasal and sinus congestion. It won't help any other symptoms. But being free of those symptoms WITHOUT using medicines is WONDERFUL!

As mentioned, anti inflammatory foods and spices are always helpful - sick or not. They may help against degenerative diseases of aging, as well as any other inflammation issues, temporary or permanent. Some of the best items are turmeric, fish oil supplements, some kinds of fish such as wild caught salmon, ginger, Ceylon cinnamon, among others. You can find the inflammation factor (and other important facts) about most foods here: http://nutritiondata.self.com/user/login?returnto=/tools/data-entry/. It is a really interesting site.

Neti pot, huh? I also have always had sinus problems. I actually has surgery about 3 or 4 years ago to help fix my sinuses. It helped a lot with reoccurring sinus infections, but I still have problems since I also have allergies/ hay fever. I'll have to try that. Then there's always my home made Habanero hot sauce. It's great in chicken soup.;)

Neti pots are GREAT!

Not exactly fun - kind of like getting water up your nose when jumping into a pool. But not that bad - you get used to it.

I saw it for the first time ever on Oprah several years ago when Dr. Oz was on. I had asked my own doctor about sinus problems years ago, and all he suggested was medicines or surgery. Never mentioned neti pots - probably didn't know about them! In fact, he said he had sinus problems too! So I thank Oprah and Dr. Oz for my lack of sinus headaches the past few years.

I should start selling them - I have probably talked a few dozen people into buying them the last few years. Give it a try - worst you could do is waste $15 or so. But everyone I got to try them said they got anywhere from a little relief to a LOT of relief.

i am VERY excited to try the neti pot with my allergies!

i just got it this fall, after hay fever season, of course.

i get really bad allergies, they are SO bad i can't even describe it. the corners of my eyes itch so bad that i can't even control myself scratching them, my nose gets crazy runny, i basically look like a mad, stoned scientist. can't sleep, can't do much of anything. i have become pretty much immune to most anti-histamines.

so this year, i am going to be using the neti pot, as well as eating local honey EVERY day. even just a tablespoon in tea is said to help.

I HOPE MY ALLERGIES GO AWAY ugh.

After reading this, I looked it up. I had never heard the term before. Sinus irrigation was part of my healing process after the surgery, so I have done that before, and yes, it does make a big difference. With my messed up sinuses I have to make sure I hold my head in every possible position when I'm done, because I can get trapped pockets of water in my sinuses which can then drain unexpectedly. It can be embarrassing.

Neti pots are more amusing to me than anything. I didn't notice any help except for about 10 minutes of clear sinuses.

Although, I still have a crapload of augmenton from when I had sinus infections and it weren't taken care of it. Maybe I should take 10 days worth and do the neti pot. That might help. xD
