Zehn and Oracle - Sunbeam snakes

Tula_Montage

It's Jager time!
Just a wee update on our CB pair of Asian sunbeam snakes - Xenopeltis unicolour. These are growing soooo rapidly, infact the female is now onto fuzzies :)

Zehn - The musker. It smells like rotten egg and enough to make you puke. Hes in shed here, but still so irridescent!

Ooooh! I really, really like his color in shed!! Who cares if he smells like rotten eggs!

I do! It's like projectile rotten egg smelly poopy musk! And hes only a wee bab, I just pray he calms down a wee bit as he gets bigger.

I need to make every effort to acquire a cbb pair (trio?) of these at some point. The "fish scales" and ventral shots make me seethe with envy and anger that I don't own these (not just the species, but YOUR actual snakes!). :angry01:

Awww LOL!

The best person to ask in the states about CB sunbeams is the Barkers (VPI). Ed and Dave exchanged emails for a while when we first got them, and Dave was shocked we had a CB pair. He said they (VPI) had only managed to breed them once in captivity, and they gave them to some uni to study, and they killed them! I think he plans to breed them again in the near future, but I may be wrong.

I never knew they were so rare, pretty cool though.
Good luck with them!

They aren't rare in the hobby... I saw some for sale in petco when I was in Texas over the summer! Captive bred babies are quite rare though. There are thousands of wc adults imported every year that are loaded with parasites and they rarley live long in captivity.

These two are just way cool, Elle! I think the worst musk I can handle is the type that my rat snakes give me... foul! Not sure if I can handle projectile rotten egg musk, ew!

LOL the worst part is, it's completely clear liquid, so you don't really know where it's went... but the smell is just overpowering :uhoh:

Really neat, the prehistoric look is way cool too...Good luck with them :*)

Thank you! They are indeed VERY primative snakes. I found out recently that they are so irredescent because theres almost no texture to their scales, even when you look under a microscope - they are like glass. They are neither a boa or a python, they have their own genus at the moment but I think they are deffinatley a boid. Theres wee spurs and they have short stubby tails... and they are extremely closley related to Loxocemus bicolour (new world python) (which we so desperatley want too - but thats even more of a challange).
