best for an egg laying box

What do yall think is best for a lay box? Spagnum moss, Vermiculite, or Spanish moss? or whatever else you may use. Reason I am asking is that I have my last bred getting ready to lay in the next week, she just had her pre lay shed. I know that with my last corn, she stayed in her box on spagnum moss, but never layed. The others have layed in spanish moss, but I don't like using it because it is too hard to keep damp. What do you think?

When given the choice of vermiculite or sphagnum moss, mine go for the sphagnum. However, I routinely use vermiculite as it's cheaper and if they have no choice, they're fine with that.

If a snake's gravid with a fertile clutch, she will lay. The available substrate in the laying box has nothing to do with it. Go with whatever works for you - any of your above options sound fine.

spagnum moss seems to pretty much be manure. Or at least smells that way. That snake that was gravid ended up dying. I got her from a guy I knew, she might have been sick when i got her. I have all of the above here, so money is not an issue at the time.

For reference, I usually go for sphagnum, although I found that plantation soil (can usually be found in brick form at pet stores with frogs) works rather well, too! It stays fairly moist for over a week at a time, so you don't have to worry about it drying out too quickly on you.

yea, I know that the spagnum moss stays moist. will probably set up a lay box with that in it, probably put anout an inch deep, maybe a little less.

I actually did a plantation soil/sphagnum combo, and put it about 2"-3" deep. They really seemed to like to burrow in it.

so you think I might need to have it a little deeper? should I mix spagnum and vermiculite?

The mixing would be up to you, but I'd definitely take it a bit deeper. They're basically looking for a spot where they can keep their eggs from the eyes of predators, and if they can bury them (even a little), they'll pick a place like that.

cool, well i don't know if the two would even mix, so I will probably just make it about 2 1/2 to 3 inches deep with the spagnum moss. I Just hope it is the right stuff, I bought mine from Wal Mart. spells like manure.

If it's the sphagnum/peat they have down here with Miracle-Gro in it, I wouldn't use it.
