i was wondering if anyone had the canon powershot a700? IF so can you tell me about it? DO any of you know of any other good cameras in the 150-300 range? i realized i needed a new camera when mine only has 2.1 megapixels:sidestep:

I have a Powershot A610. Basically the same thing I think. I like it a lot. It's really easy to take macro shots. And for the price, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a camera that you can get different lenses for and stuff like that. I think it's a quality camera. There's a good website for comparing digicams somewhere. I think it's dpreview.com or something.

Anyway, take a look at some of my posts lately in the photography forum to see some shots I took with it.

I have an Powershot A520 (or someththing like that...) and I swear by it! It's not as fancy and high tech as some of the other one's you can get, (*cough cough* Joe, Susan, Rich) but it is very good quality for the price. I was in the dark ages with cameras for quite som time, and this was a breathe of fresh air. It's user friendly and very versatile... not to mention you get some great pics out of it. Here are just a few random shots for comparison:

i work at a camera store and i always recommend the nikon coolpix series as a cheap, no frills SOLID camera that takes good pictures. you can get like a 5600 or something for 200 bucks and it's 5mp.

It's on the high side of your price range, but my Panasonic DMC-FZ5 has been great. I'm not camera savvy and don't have a great command of photography and am still able to get very good pics with the most basic settings (what I consider good pics). I'm sure with a little studying, my pictures will improve a lot. It's easy to operate. Any of my pictures on this forum, within the last 6-8 months, have been with this camera.
Also, most of pics in the link in my sig. area are with this camera.

I hesitated at the cost, but seeing as how I went 20 years without a camera at all, this one will last me quite some time. Plus, there are great websites (butterflyphoto for example) where you can find top notch cameras for much less than at big stores like Best Buy (they are usually new in-box/not refurbished, but you should always check before buying).

that' camera's pretty good too regarding how much zoom it has on it. and along with that website i would recommend www.bhphoto.com which is basically the photography/image/anything super store. in most cases its the cheapest and the best service possible. there are certain websites that advertise super low prices and then try to sell you a ton of accessories to compensate, and if you don't buy them they tell you the camera is backordered...places like bwayphoto.com and digitaliquidators...stay away from them. for a good website for ratings check out www.resellerratings.com

Yep, 12x optical was a big selling point. That and image stabilization.

I agree you have to be skeptical with what websites you shop at. There are plenty of crooks out there and plenty of sites that don't clearly state whether an item is new, used, etc... You've just gotta be a smart shopper.

I've heard that you can get a camera really cheap from certain websites, or from Ebay. But you might not get all your owners manuals and accessories that are supposed to come with the camera. And you might get a refurbished camera from who-knows-where.

I watched the sales and got mine for $50 off at Target. Just watch your local stores and you should be able to get some money off.

But I'll tell you what - I did go into my local camera store and talk to those guys. The knowledge they bestow on you and the service they can provide you will make it worth while to buy your camera there, if they have good service.
