Cornsnake freakout?

SarahP

Crazy Snake Lady Trainee
So, tonight, I was looking at my charcoal gal, who was hanging out in one of her hides, and sticking her head out as usual. I noticed she was looking at the back of the tank. It's open to the room and there's a light on a little behind the tank. Standing lamp, so it's not shining directly on her.

I wiggled my fingers a little, as she usually comes to investigate. Not tonight. Tonight, she literally threw herself toward the back of the tank and then spend the next few minutes bumping into the underside of the tank lid, and speeding side to side along the back.

She calmed down for a while, but when I went over to the tank to look at her, she started speeding around again. So I covered the tank with towels and she *seems*calm at the moment, though she's still cruising around. Slower, now, fortunately.

Any ideas what would cause that sort of freakout? Too much light? The lamp is on most of the day, but she has hides, she can get out of it. She hasn't done this before that I'm aware of in the two weeks that I've had her.

She may be getting ready to shed. They can't see as well. My normally not so calm 5 month old corn will totally freak out like that when she starts a shed cycle and I do something to startle her.

I agree with the shed idea. Or she could have had a sudden change in her guts/metabolism and is now very hungry.Wiggling fingers look an awfully lot like small rodents...

You might want to consider putting some kind of background on the back and sides to prevent distractions from bothering the snake.

Thanks for the responses, all.

Putting towels over the tank yesterday calmed her down, though she was still exploring.

I have one draped over the back of the tank today and she's still hunting, so I'm going to offer her another mouse.

I was told that she's a 2008, but she's only 93 g. My 2009, as weighed last night, is 92g. So I'm a little concerned that she's too skinny. I know it's all about body shape and the individual shape, but she seems a little triangular to me. We'll see if some more food in ze belly is what she wants.

Just an update on this: Have been keeping the towel on the back of the tank, which seems to help. I have also switched her to a five-day feeding schedule, and she has not done this wild charge at the back of the tank since. So, I guess she really was hungry. :)
