Faux rocks - glossiness?

I've been thinking of turned a cabinet into a new reptile enclosure, and saw instructions on how to make a faux rock wall. I was intrigued. But my 'practice' rocks are very glossy. Anyone know how to reduce the glossiness?

I heard sprinkling sand onto the rock in between finish layers works, but I didn't have any on hand; instead, I took a few small pieces of dried grout, ground it up, and used that. It added a nice texture to the rock, but covered the color and didn't do anything for the glossiness.

How big are the rocks you are working with?
Couldn't you just sand them with a rough grit sand paper a bit?
Or are these tiny rocks???

A link to the directions you have been following might be helpful. Or just describe what you've done so far.
