Just joined the ranks and have had my new friend for only two days but am getting a bit paranoid. In the store, "Akira" was very active and enjoyed being handled by me and the store owner. I bought akira to be a kindergarten class pet.

The owner fed Akira while I was there so I could see how to do it. It was noon. After getting home I haven't tried to interact with him, as its a new home, and was told he might be testy for two days after a feeding. He has, however, become nocturnal, which is natural for them.

I tried to pick him up today (Monday) at about 5:30 pm, and had to get him from hiding. He was VERY skittish and didn't want to seem to want to be touched at all. Btw he's about 1 1/2 feet long, maybe a year and a half...

Here are my questions:
Should I just let him be for a while or try to hold him every day?
Should I try to change his sleep patterns gradually by shifting things to a night on light so he thinks it's day at night?
Was he docile in the store because he was tired?

Looking forward to hearing from all you veterans out there

How long does

Welcome to the club! We only had our snake for couple of month, from what I read, you should leave Akira alone for a few more days before trying to handle him, general wisdom is to leave the snake in its new environment for five to seven days undisturbed. Nanci has an excellent guide here about caring for corn snake. Once he's adjusted, I would handle him a little bit everyday except two days after each feeding.

I'm not sure about trying to change their sleep pattern, our snake is more active in the evening. We do take out our snake in the morning, and usually she would wake up and slither around a bit before we tuck her back in her viv, but in general she's getting her morning snooze when we lift her hide.

I would recommend getting some of the "spy" hide, so the kids can peek at Akira occasionally when he is in his hide.

Good luck!
