Hypo attached to stripe/motley gene

limey

hi i am a cornsnakeoholic
I 'd just noticed darin saysing that a fair few of the stripe and motley animals often have reduced black or even no black and simulate hypo animals. So does motley and stripe carry the hypo gene ? has anyone tested this theory ? can you make hypos from a stripes and motleys ie have a normal patterned offspring that looks phenotypically like a hypo(or woudl it actaully indeed be hypo).

This also made me think do the hypos you are hving trouble with come form stripes or motleys anywhere in there breeding background ? maybe stripe and motley if they did havea a hypo gene carry a diffent one depending on the pattern type hence all the types of unexpected hypos/not hypos hatchlings

Anyway it was just a though i am probaly babbling and woefully incorrect :)

Nope, the fact that Motley and Striped corns appear lighter is not a result of the standard (or any known) hypo gene. This is evidenced by the differences between motleys/stripes versus their hypo-expressing counterparts.

What people generally mean by "the hypo effect of motley" is that they appear to have less dark pigment. IMO at least some of this is a result of the pattern "smearing." It makes sense to me that they'd look different color-wise, too. If they weren't I'd think it was odd. :)
