i have jsut started a 1.2 colony of mice in a 10gallon and was wondering when they have babies what to do to keep them alive without eating eachother, how many i can have in there, how long they take to feeder size ect. i have heard that the male will sometimes eat the babies and other horror stories. any tips will be great. thnx guys

Okay that sounds good mate. The gestation period for a mouse is about 18-20 days. What feeders are you looking for, in terms of size (so like fuzzy, weaned etc.). If it's the larger mice, then you will probably need a larger tank. Also, how many snakes do you have? If you have too few then you may have to cull some of the mice otherwise you'll be overrun lol.

Oh and usually it's the females who eat the babies, this is often due to a lack of nutrition in their diet, or simply because they wish to eat the other mother's babies due to competition. If this happens, don't panic, usually this dies out in the mother after two or three litters. It doesn't always happen though.

The mice should be weaned (taken away from their mothers) at 3 - 4 weeks after birth. You'll know when to remove them because they'll be fully alert, they'll be active, and they'll have teeth. They'll also perform a 'popcorn' action when you open the lid or come close to the tank, so basically, jumping all over the place. This obviously means you'll need aternative housing for them.

The mice will then become sexually active at 6 weeks for females and 8 weeks for males.

Hope this helps

David
