Petco: IBD?

Teddy Roosevelt

i loev cronsankes
I was at Petco today and they recently received some red-tail boas. Well I walked by their enclosure and one of them has his front half of his body straight up and his head bent backwards. He held this position for a good 15 minutes or so without moving. It looks like stargazing to me.

Well, the temp gauge in the back reads over 90 degrees F. Could just be laying on the glass to cool off. I keep my red tail at about 92 on the bedding, but ambient will be around 80, not in the 90's like that tank reads.

But who knows how it's heated, I'll find out the next time I'm at my wife's Petco. I think most cases of IBD that I have read about shows the snake holding it's head unsupported also. Petco do have vets for each region, so you can notify them and they can get their vet to check it out.

Maybe there was something interesting up there, if they had Milksnakes one might of escaped =o, at our Petco the milksnakes seem to like to go into the other snake's enclosures......i guess they find those ones more comfortable =]

Eh, saying it's stargazing is quite a stretch. It looks more like it's just looking up. Plenty of snakes freeze in odd positions.

15 minutes is quite some time, though. Not to jump to conclusions too early, but it's definitely a good thing to be aware of the signs, and certainly best to be safe then sorry.

My female boa does that all the time. Usually when it's getting close to feeding day. She also knows the top opens and that is where she can get out. :)

Hardly IBD... that's idle sun worshiping... Sloaris tends to do so for at least 30 minutes at a time... without moving a single muscle she stays frozen... and the viv opens from the -side-.

If you'll notice when putting your Boas back into their vivs, they will always aspire to go up... I think it's their arboreal nature mingled with a wish to bask
