hey guys..my colony of 1.1 had their first litter of rats over the night..but the male's kind of a jerk and sometimes shows aggression towards the female..would it be a better idea to remove the male for a month or so?..and also..any suggestions on the pups would be appreciated

thanks,
mike

My rats just had their first litter recently and I noticed some "aggression" too but I did a little reading and from what I read apparently the females are most fertile within a few hours to a day from the time the pups are born. So the aggression might just be a male excited for a little action. Just my two cents though. I'm culling the babies very early so I don't have any suggestions on their care, but my mama rat seemed to know what to do without any help from me.

After birth the female will go in to postpartum estrus for 24-72 hours...All's the male is trying to do is breed her again. More then likely not hurting her in the least...
