I no longer trust the screen tops with the clips. I have a 10 gallon tank with a slide lid (not a zilla) that did not have a place for the thermostat cord. As a result I was using an after market screen with G clips. He had been getting up in the rim. Sometimes his tail (last inch or so) would poke out as he cruised around the front of the lip. I was not concerned because he is big enough to eat two pinkies and had happened with my other snake initially as well.

Last night I happened to look over and see him with MOST of his body outside of the tank. He was stuck by his tail (which he was using to grip with) and his HEAD. I have since switched tanks to one with a sliding lid that will work with the thermostat. I am glad I caught this when I did. It seems to have had the potential for either an escapee or death by choking.

that funny. Yesterday I found my corn under my tank on top of the heating mat. I dont think i but my lid on right now I have a phone book on top of it.

We had the same issue with our Daughters little bitty caramel stripe corn. She must have gone right out the area where the thermostat cord went in the back of the tank under the screen lid. I came up with a solution though and that snake is not going anywhere now for sure. Since she is just in a 10 gallon tank for now I went to our local hobby store and bought some 1/4" square basswood strips, cut them to the dimensions of the inside lip of the tank, gorilla glued the corners together and finished them off with 1 tiny nail in each corner. Then I went to our local Lowes home improvement store and bought some all climate marine and automotive weatherseal by md (located next to the home weatherstripping). It already had a strip of adhesive on the back but I know that's a big no no with snakes so I pulled off the adhesive (easily in 1 piece) and quickly wiped both the inside edge of the screen lid and the back of the weatherseal down with naptha. Then I used e6000 to glue the strips of the weatherseal all the way around the screen lid on the inside. The glue does smell quite a bit so I let it sit for more than 24 hours until it cured completely and the scent was completely gone before putting it back on the tank. I'm not sure how this would work with different clips but we use the small four paws clips and it works great. I can post pictures tomorrow if anyone is interested.

the clips are nice for reptiles that are not snakes. We found out the hard way by me waking up in the middle of the night and peeking in for the heck of it to find our new snake goneeeee. Problem solved by putting a book on top of the tank.

My snake will get on the rim under the screen and cruise around there too so right away when i got him i put 2 phone books on it and he has never come close to getting out

Books are a snake keepers best friend lol. Amazingly I have to use 2 BIG and heavy books to keep my oldest corn (a mere 08 by the way) in his nice display cage I am slowly decorating. One is the complete works of Edgar Allen Poe and the other is a text book on health. LOL

I guarantee that anybody that uses clips or books to hold a lid down will eventually forget and have a snake get out. It happens all the time.

GINGERCDN...

Here's the tank of which I recently bought two and so far, I'm very happy with them:
Zilla Slide Lock Lid "Critter Cage" 20 gallon: 30"x12"12"

I got one of these last week for my first CS Adult and another today for an expected arrival. Check out your local PetCo. Ours had them on sale at $59.00. I've seen them elsewhere for $99.00.

So the lid is actually designed right into the tank. I love it. I'll look into getting on of these then. (Sorry for the thread deviation.)

I use screen clips (the half rectangle ones). You slide the straight clip under the thick black seal that lines the rim of the tank, then take the slightly bendy clip (takes a lot of work to bend it) and pull it over that one so it completely covers it and latches onto the top of the screen. My corn hasn't gotten out of it, and neither have my ball pythons. :) :)

I love my Zilla critter cage, too. I have no worries that Sienna will get out. I'm planning to buy another one soon. :)
