There's a Panther in My House! (DUW)

AshleyShadows

It piss me so bad.
A panther chameleon, that is! These are definitely my favorite chameleon, though this one is probably the least attractive I've ever seen. So I guess it's a good thing he's not mine and I'm just watching him for one of the vets I work with. She said I was the only person she trusted to take care of him :D

Zeke, had a horrific start to life. He came in with 9 other babies that were seized from a breeding facility. All were tiny, underfed, and had metabolic bone disease. The vets at A&M got them back to health after a few months and they all got placed in different homes. This one stayed with a vet there.

She's at a CE event in Florida this weekend, so he's staying with me. Prepare for a picture fest. Many more will be added!

Fresh out of the cage.

More to come and thanks for looking!

SQUEEEEEE! Are you only keeping him for the weekend!? Oh noez, I won't be in until Saturday!

Also, isn't that Giles' vase? WHERE'S GILES?!

YES he will be here! He's staying until Thursday so you can come and party with him. I won't be here Friday night/Saturday so hopefully KB will mist him and man the lights.

Giles died! I must be the worst fish keeper ever. My mom said it could be because the cat drinks out of the bowl, but he does that way more to Grissom and he's still among the living. I was very sad about it. And this new fish SUCKS! He doesn't know what food is >.>

Yay! I haven't got my "big" birthday gift from my parents yet, so I was deciding between a Panther or a new laptop. I've been looking at getting a complete set-up, but it would only be good for 5 months until I'd need to upgrade to a bigger enclosure, but they have a male Blue-Bar that I WANT SO BADLY. I'll see how this guy interacts before I make a decision, though.

And SAD DAY! Fitzliam died, too. My parents forgot to turn the heat on one night and he was in my bathroom where there are no heat vents, so I think he froze. :[ Poor guy... And lol, I'm sure he'll figure it out.

chameleons are so cool. i wish i had one, or a dozen... oh and i know betta's can live in those vases, but that isnt really ideal, i keep mine in a little 2 gal tank and he loves it... my fiance named him leeroy

I don't know why you can't see the pictures :( That's the way I normally post them.

I'm sure a 2 gallon would be nice, but I've been keeping betta fish in bowls like that for years...which is way better than the little cups they come in at the store. They live in less water than that in the wild. Perhaps someday when I have more room.

Jessica - I'm sorry about Fitzliam! He had a nice long life though!. Zeke is really fun, but I'd be weary of getting one with a nice big enclosure just yet if you're unsure of where you're going to be next year with internships and whatnot.

Hmmm... I think you have some dracaena in that bowl, which is a bog plant and not totally aquatic. It is likely to die and foul up your water. D:

Anyway! What a cool chameleon, I'm glad you're taking care of him. <3

Omg we got so much fish hatin' up in hur..

I have no idea what the plant is, but they sell it as an aquarium plant at petsmart, and I'd definitely never leave it in there if it started getting gross. It's been in there for a while and looks great..so..

But yes, I'm glad to take care of him too! He's been quite entertaining!

No worries, I've done my research. Babies aren't supposed to be put in adult cages until 10-12 months, and there's an intermediate set-up in between and they're both very manageable. Also, with all my animals, and more snakes on the way, I won't be doing any internships out of the state, or far from home, anyways.

They live in less water than that in the wild.
Not exactly. The waters in the rice paddies where wild bettas live may be shallower but they have a huge amount of water available to them within the rice paddies. I don't think that vase is bad though. It might not be ideal but as long as you keep the water clean I'm sure he's fine. :)

Anyway, I love the pics, he's so cute! I would love to have a chameleon someday, they're adorable and their feet are amazing to me.

It's so weird, Petsmart sells little aqiarium plant bundles and almost none of them are fully aquatic plants. >___> I think they sell them like that so they die and people have to keep replacing them. lol

Also,
"They live in less water than that in the wild."

That's a common misconception, they live in shallow slow moving streams and river beds, with territories generally 1 square meter in size. And by shallow I mean shin deep.

lol I'm a betta fanatic and I always jump at the chance to dispel myths about them.

He is so cute! That is great that you get to babysit him. I love Chameleons but I don't feel I'm ready for one yet. Hopefully one day I'll get one they are just too cute.

In regards to the betta it is not ideal to keep them in bowls. They do fine as long as they are feed and cleaned but the do better with bigger tanks with filters. I just recently learned this myself. I used to keep mine in 1 gallon bowls. I had one for 4 years in a bowl but when I started reading more about them I opted to get him a bigger place.

Check this forum out it has really good information and the site itself is cool.

That cham is soooo cute! But in a strange way, hes cute LOL! He definitely has a story and I am glad it has a happy ending :D

I used to have a small 10g community fish tank with a betta in it. He would make his rounds in the cage and make little bubble nests... those were cute! No female though, but he would still make his nest LOL

So I'll never post a picture of a betta again...wow guys.. I thought the picture was adorable and that's all I wanted to share. I'm sure it's not the most ideal situation, but neither are racks or lots of other things people do with reptiles. My betta is fine and happy. His bubble nest is crazy..and whatever. I'm not going to attempt to fight this.

Anyway..back to the actual topic of the thread, Zeke is doing well and I'll take more pictures of him this weekened.

Okay now I can see them....must have been the computer I was on, it wasn't mine. Chameleons are so cool! Congrats on getting to keep him for a week :)

I love Zeke! His little hands pinch like crazy, but... in a kind of "good" way. Almost like a hand massage.

As to the fish... I'm a Betta fish fanatic. I have them all over my house. I am a member of fish forums galore. And while I have to agree that they do not live, naturally, in areas as small as people think they do, they can still thrive in small bowls as long as you keep their water clean. Just like how corn snake breeders keep their guys in racks, Betta fish breeders keep their stock in cups probably equivalent to what they live in at pet stores, maybe a little bigger. Plus, since the fish in stores were most likely bred in captivity, the vase that she's keeping her fish in is much bigger than anything he's used to. I myself have a male Betta in a 5 gallon tank and then several other males in smaller tanks- and I can't say that the 5 gallon tank is any happier than the others. And as to them living in communities with other fish- while male Bettas are fine temperament wise doing that, it's not the most ideal either, since other fish will pick on them and eat their fins. Every Betta I've kept with other fish has died, also- maybe from a disease the other fish had that only affected the Betta, I don't know. Sorry to highjack the thread. I just wanted to say that for most animals that we keep, sure, having nice giant enclosures might make everyone more happy... but sometimes we have to compromise. And those "aquatic" plants? Yeah, not so much. While I've had some that live forever, I've also had some that died immediately. Le sigh.
