  • A lot of things are amazingly cheap at the reptile shows. I got my little hypo-bloodred hatchling for about $35. Online stores show up in person and sell what they would normally sell online except without the shipping charges/overhead, etc. My son negotiated for a twenty gallon tank for about fifteen dollars. It was a little crazy, kind of like a feeding frenzy...ha :)
The reptile show back in November 2013 was the first to which I'd ever gone. "Repticon" is a group that puts shows on all over the US. Not sure if this was one of theirs or not. Anyway, it was packed with people and vendors - a veritable smorgasbord of equipment and animals for sale. A medium UTH costs about $30 here, but at the show it was only $11. There's another coming to Phoenix this winter, but it's on the other side of town and not the best neighborhood. :( I wish you had one near you! :)
I got several of my snakes at the Reptile Center here locally, but went looking for my hypo bloodred at the reptile show back in November. I knew exactly what I wanted, but it was really tempting to get another as well. I'm hoping to find a female pewter motley, but I may have to settle for a charcoal motley. I'll have to watch for one. :)
So what's your plan for your next snake, if you get one? You say you like the reds and the snows, I remember. There are so many out there, though! Did you get (is it "Jessie"?) through a breeder, or what?
With a little help from my husband, a long string and a scale, ha. :) I run the string along their bodies and then measure the string. The scale is a food scale that measures in grams. I put a bowl on the scale and measure it, then tare (which tells the scale to remove the bowl's weight) then put the snake in the bowl. The only snake not weighed for me was the Ultramel, as he was weighed lately at the pet store. I don't know if he would fit in my bowl at this point, anyway:)
Sizes! Nobody likes being measured. ha ha. Females: Carolina is 2 ft 3 in, 108 g, hypo Blood red is 1 ft 7 in, 47 g, Puzzle is 2 ft, 47.5 g, and Snow is 2 ft, 8 in, 187 g. Males: Pewter (motley?) about 2 ft 6 in, 260 grams, and Ultramel, 4+ feet, 645 g. All the females are late 2013. Pewter, about 1.5 years, and Ultramel at least 3 years we know.
That's funny. My son's ultramel (4.5 feet or so) " unloaded" on him on the couch once. What a mess! Ha.
My little Carolina (Ophelia) was my second snake. She's the one in my avatar. I think the Carolinas are neat to look at because you can see all the potential colors in one snake. She has a great little personality, too.
Are you interested in any particular morphs? I find them all fascinating, but seem eerily drawn to the blood-red, diffused, and amelanistics. I have no idea what morph my little one Puzzle is. Some folks here on the forum seem strongly in favor of naming him a ghost. I guess I just liked the mystery, which became even more interesting when the breeder informed me she was female. :)
I don't know if the last message got through - so I'll repeat it. I'm in Mesa, AZ (Suburb of Phoenix, AZ) deep in the desert. yick. And you?
Ohh makes sense now haha, hopefully il have my numbers up soon, just waiting until I've been on holiday in August first so I don't have to leave them all, where are you from?:)
I just learned the "number" code recently myself. The first number is the number of males, the second the number of females, and the third for unknowns. I have 1 male cornsnake, 4 female cornsnakes, and 0 unknowns. I could say that my son and I have 3.1 cats and leave off the last zero - meaning we have three male cats, one female. Weird, isn't it? I have a very patient husband who is letting me change my numbers to 2.4.0 soon - my pewter male cornsnake is soon to be on his way. One reason I have so many snakes is that they're like potato chips, but also because my parents (mother, specifically) would not allow anything that ate mice in the house. I tried to explain to her that mice were worse, but no dice. There's no convincing some folks, ha. Even so, compared to a lot of the folks on the forum, I don't have that many :)
I only have one corn and a dog haha, wanted a snake for years but my parents have always said they don't want one in there house, I got one anyway though and now they like it, I'm hopefully using a spare room for a snake room soon though :D what does 1.4.0 mean?always see people saying them numbers haha
