Tank temperature?

Hi, I have just brought a 3 week old corn snake and was wondering what temperature I should keep my tank at.
I currently have a heat-mat and a red light to heat my tank (I have a colder side of my tank too)
I was worrying about the heat-mat for it was very very hot and I couldn't touch it because of its heat, so I turned its power off and have just left the red light on.(The heat is now at 84 f)
But I'm just not sure what the heat should be at.

P.S. I apologies if this thread is in the wrong place.

For future reference, threads like this should go in the Husbandry sub-forum.

You want the warm side to be ~80-85F. A UTH needs a rheostat or thermostat to control it's heat output. Without regulation, it is going to get far too hot. Once you've got something in place to regulate the UTH, you should be able to stop using the heat lamp. Using both a heat lamp and a UTH is overkill.

For making a rheostat see this thread: http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19168&highlight=rheostat

Or you can buy them at various places or buy a thermostat.
