Hello everyone!

I have another poll for you, mainly because I am very visual and they work well for me. I have always fed my corns mice or rats...but what about other prey items that can be purchased either frozen or live?

What other prey items do you feed?
Live or frozen or in pieces (like chicken legs)?
Where do you get them from?
Any concerns?

Thanks a bunch, I am always looking for ways to improve and you are all great about helping!

Erin

Right now, apart from mice & rats, we have some quail chicks as well as baby chickens in the freezer. I don't think I've actually fed a whole lizard to any of my corns yet, but I have used anole skin for scenting pinks/fuzzies. Now that we have a few anoles, I might try them out on some stubborn feeders this year.

I dont feed my breeders add most of my juvies.any rodents. I boil chicken necks, pork cut into thick long strips, and turkey and whole chicken cut into thick strips. I try to leave in bone when it is not to thick. Sometimes I brake up the bones while the meat is raw with hammer befor cutting up the meat . Always check for sharp points of bone to remove or dull out. Then boil

Mrweaw you ask for ideas than sick the board on me. You asked a question. you got a answer dont push flack on me . take it for what is worth and move on. dont put me in the hot seat. this is the 2nd & 3rd breeding season that this is been in use yes it is experamint. I would like you to retract your stament about me. you dont know the crap I went on that thread. They do fine on a solid diet of mice. I did this for years. I'm not being nasty but you just opened a bad can of worms.

you sound like good person ask all the questions you want ,just dont put some one in the hot seat and put them up on trial. I know you didn't realise this . read the thread that JTGOFF66 posted you will see what hell they put me through. Just because I ask if anybody would to try somthing new . I never asked if anybody liked it or not ,I didn't asked what people thought, all I wanted was to see if somebody wanted to try what I feed my snakes or if somebody was doing the same thing I was. I found 1 person who is going to try my diet . He wants to do the all the tec. homework. to see if there is any long term bad problems with my diet.
then there is the post I put one of my snakes for sale and I said in my add that I feed it less food because it was my back up male. cause a girl asked is that right what do every body thinks . well I think you know what happend.
Two months latter and 1 1/2 " bigger he was breeding. My friend Carlos in miami bought him . after I used him for breeding. so dont think I being hard on you It is I dont need no spot light on me thanks . At least you dont mean any harm I'm sorry if I came down on you a little hard I dont mean to sound like that. peace and have a nice night .

This is exactly what everyone is talking about Vinman. Erin was asking about your diet without knowing anything about it, NOT putting you in the hot seat. Your post was ridiculous and uncalled for. Nobody puts you in the hot seat, you do a wonderful job of it yourself.

Erin, any question you ask on these forums is welcome. Don't let Vinman's bad manners and attitude scare you away please.

And if you're going to put my name in your posts Vin, at least get the NUMBER right, it's 69, not 66.

did you read my reply I think I said the right thing and yes that is puting me in the hot seat when you call on a board to judge what you say you get put on stand. This is the question asked ( I would like everyone's imput on the feeding style used by Vinman ) this is putting me on trial . how come you didn't quote the 2nd post if you gona say somthing tell the whole story I think my seconed post said enuff

Neither Erin or myself had any intentions of putting you "on trial" Vin. She was simply asking for everyone's input on what seemed like an interesting feeding method, and I directed her to the thread so she could read, and make up her own mind. I don't need to quote every post you make, other people can read.

When you, quoting Erin, make people feel like you've "slapped them in the face" on these boards that I consider myself to be a part of, you made it my business. Frankly, you're defensiveness, followed by nasty outbursts, and then apologies, aren't cutting it anymore. I've stayed out of the other "debates" you've had with Joe, Egg, Serp, and others, but you need to grow up and think a little before you type the first thing that comes to your mind.

Erin, if you would like to delete this thread, just go to your original post, click on Edit, and it will give you the option to delete the whole thread. Best thing to do in my opinion.

JTGoff69 why dont you work with me in trying to save this therad there is no reason to delete this thread it can be saved why dont you help out I willing to
ERin would you like to save this thred I think it is a real good topic

I feed mice and rats and African soft furred rats. These days it's probably about 90% African soft furred as that's what I'm breeding currently.

As for the rest of this thread, nobody put anybody on trial, and you don't need to keep repeating the same things over and over again.

From the post after this I am guessing that many here do not approve of your menu. It's not for me to approve or disapprove. I am just wondering how your snakes are doing on this diet. Do they grow at the same rate as snakes feed f/t (non-cooked) food? :shrugs:

When I first got my corn snake I sent an e-mail to the herpatologist at Columbia Riverbanks Zoo and asked his help on what to feed the corn. I mean, after all, I would get bored on nothing but eating the same thing. He said rodents are all they need to eat. Well, I get my food from RodentPro and, so far, I am happy with the service, price and condition of the food. I have feed the two adults live finches and an anole. They are currently on f/t adult mice, weaned rats, day old quail and week old chicks. My baby was just introduced to fuzzy mice and when she is able to I am going to feed her pinky rats.

Only the owner knows who well their snake is doing in their care. If an owner has kept four same sized corns together and they are doing fine, then it's no-ones concern about cohabitation. If an owner feeds their corns cooked food and they are doing fine, again, it's no-ones concern.

:-offtopic NOW, is it my imagination or is there a lot of snakes going missing? :sidestep:

I used to live in the Bronx, Hull Ave.

Nice to see this post back on topic. You know, it's not about who feeds what and its wrong to feed that. It's a simple poll to find out what others do. Unless it's a question, is there really a need to respond? ( especially in a negative manner)

Personally I feed mice and rats. Have never tried anything else. I would wonder a couple of things, nutritional comparissions, availability and cost.

http://www.nal.usda.gov/awic/zoo/WholePreyFinal02May29.pdf

Let's just see if I can piece some of this together.

Prey Prey Size Protein Fat kCal/g

Mouse adult over 10g 55.8% 23.6% 5.25
Rat juv 10-50g 56.1% 27.5% 5.55
Guinea Pig neonatal male 51.2% 34.7% 5.95
Chicken one day old 64.9% 22.4% 5.8

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW MUCH A BABY CHICKEN AND A NEONATAL GUINEA PIG WEIGHS?

Quail not specified 63.1% 31.9% 6.79
Anole adult, 10g+ 67.4 unavailable unavailable

Hope that helps compare some prey, I tried to keep it within similiar size ranges with the info I had.

RodentPro gives the sizes on their website. I feed chicks and quails because I read somewhere they were good for scales and shedding. I just started on the rats because of their protein and fat content but I don't intend to keep Gaia on a rat diet, it's just for now while she is growing the most. The adults get a rotated feeding - mouse, quail, mouse, chick, mouse, rat; Smokey has a tendency to get fussy so I don't want him to develope a taste for just non-mouse food. I never tried neonatel guinea pigs because I think they just might be a little too big for my adults - I have to look into that.

Since we got the adults they shed every four to six weeks and there have been no problems with the shedding and with the exception of Smokey and one regurg no regurg problems. Gaia sheds about every four weeks, no regurgs and no shedding problems.

?

i have heard but do not know whether it is true that you should not feed snakes chiks as they have no nutritional value. i do not know if it is true but i have heard it said a few times.
