New corns, yay! (a problem, though)

NEEDS MORE COWBELL!
I went to a reptile show today in Columbia. I went with the intention of buy "a corn, maybe two if I can find what I want." Well, I came home with 3 heh.

I bought a '04 CB female ghost from Glades herp. Got a great deal on her too. Also from them I got a WC Miami male. Very nice coloration on him.

I went over to one of the local vendor's tables who had a bunch of WC specimens from the state. I spotted one that look a lot like a Miami (but wouldn't have been from South Carolina) and took a liking to it. I asked the guy if I could pick him up and take a look. He said I could, but "good luck with that one." Apparently every single person who had picked him up this morning had been bitten. I picked him up and he was calm as could be. No biting at all. The guy and his business partners were amazed. He seemed like he was going to cut a good deal for me. I offered him $10 for the guy and he declined. I noticed a strange deformity on the side of the corn. It's not quite a kink. It almost feels like some of the muscles aren't protected by ribs in that area. I pointed it out and the guy offered it to me for free. Well, I wasn't going to turn down free!

Alas, even some free things come at a price. I brought him home and was taking a closer look at him and his "spot" when I noticed a small critter: mites! NOOO! Looks like I'll be treating him. Fortunately I have not handled any of the other snakes and I've immediately removed him from the room with the other snakes. I've looked over the other snakes and they all seem fine. I have removed the original container from my house and placed the snake on paper towels. I plan to follow the instructions for using Nix found in another thread on the boards.

Does everyone think I am taking the appropriate steps to protect my other snakes? I'll post some pics of all of them once I get a hold of a digital camera. :/

My first inclination would be to say give the other snakes all a nix treatment too... I know its a lot of work, but I'm of the mind better safe than sorry. I'm a big fan of the Nix treatment. I've even used it on my tiny hatchlings with no ill-effects. In any case, good luck and I hope you successfully eliminate all those little mites!

Just be careful with the Nix.

You should be okay, but check your other snakes for mites. Use paper towles or newspaper for a while on all of the snakes to make sure none of them have mites also.

Yea

Congrads on getting 3 snakes thats really neat you'll have to post some pics of them some time!.. As far as the snake with the problem you have described i think you are taking pefect precautions as far as keeping your other snakes protected!..Are you willing to spend some money to get a check up on your snake and make sure that this problem is curable...I have a 2 year old albino corn ans shes a beautiful snake!...Hope your snake gets better.

Well, I don't have any prior show experience to use as a comparison, but I'd have to say as far as corns go the show wasn't very impressive. It's a shame, really. Any cornsnake breeder would have done very well at the show I think.

I'd say about a third of the vendors had cornsnakes of SOME type, but most of them had WC local normals. One table had 5 ghosts that were dirt cheap ($18 each). I recommend checking them out. I saw a hypo motley that was way overpriced. I saw a few adult amels and some anerys. There weren't any caramels, much to my disappointment. Honestly, there weren't any corns of the "advanced" morphs. The most impressive corn I saw was a hypo motley amel, which was selling for an excellent price, but I had already spent too much money.

It was a great show if you like geckos though. TONS of those. Lots of hots, too.

Thanks for the reply. Columbia is only about an hour away so i may still go and check it out, hope somebody is selling frozen feeders. :)

Sweet. I'm just outside of Charleston. I'd say the show is worth an hour drive. Let me know how it goes and good luck with any finds.

By the time I got there things were picked over, but I got the rats that I went for and ended up with 2 leos. Didnt see many corns except for the WC and after reading about the mites I was careful not to handle any since I wasnt sure where you got yours. I would love to go to the Raliegh show but I dont think time will allow.

I think aside from the geckos the most common animal there was all the kingsnakes, goodness. There were quite a few ball pythons, but I didn't see anything but normals.

I had intended to go to the Raleigh show last year, but that's a 4 hour drive for me and I have no idea who will be there. I think I'd rather just wait until August and make the 8 hour drive for the Daytona show. At least there I know EVERYONE will be there.

On another note: I purchased everything I needed to begin the Nix treatment. I have kept the infested snake isolated 2 rooms away from the other snakes and have not handled him before handling the others ever since I got them. There hasn't really been an opportunity to infect the other snakes yet, so I'm only going to treat this one (also because I'm a bit apprehensive about the treatment being totally safe). I'll keep an eye on the other snakes and treat them if I notice any mites. I don't think that will happen though.

Kathy is supposedly speaking this saturday at the show in raleigh. If i'm not mistaken, i think i read somewhere around 3 pm
