Corn Snake Friendly
I was just wondering what do people use to incubate there eggs in because i know everyone does something differently...i was just curious...thanks for voting :)

Hurley really helped me with this. She explained how she kept the eggs on a shelf in a sealed deli and at room temp of the reptile room. She has been experiencing great hatchling rates. i wasn't confident with the room temps in my house so i combined Hurley's method and an incubator. I just use a cheap Styrofoam cooler with a heat mat at the bottom hooked up to a thermostat. I seal the egg boxes off completely so all humidity is held in egg box. It has been working great so far for my leopard gecko's and my newly layed corn eggs are looking very happy in them. The trick is to have a light fog on the lid of the deli. I set mine up a few weeks before she layed and i haven't had to touch it since. THANKS AGAIN HURLEY!

Thank you Chris for the reply. I liked Connies idea too but the thing is i cant keep the room that temp. I only live in a one bedroom apt. It would be so different if it was a two bedroom because i would have a reptile (snake) room of course. But since i dont and dont think i will in a few years when i breed.I really like you idea Chris. Are you just using a regular heating bad or a UTH? Thanks again

Sorry i didn't clarify. It is a regular UTH. Any size will work. The larger it is the faster it will heat up. This is nice for after you open the box and let all the heat out but bad if your thermostat fails. I put a shelf of wire inside the box about 6 inches above the UTH. I am using a zoo-med 20 gallon heat mat hooked up to an A-life thermostat.

I keep mine in ziploc type containers and basically use the room temp method...except I make sure room temp is around 82 degrees in that room ;)

I got a brillian incubator for my birthday last year (1 week before the eggs came) but otherwise I was going to use the 'cupboard above the fridge' method. Incubation medium wise I used vermiculite last year with brilliant results but will try perlite this year for a couple of clutches just to have a try of something different.

I used...

a homemade incubator one a couple of years ago and worked out great! :)

Chris is there anyway i can get may a pic of the incubator you use or if you can give directions on how to make it. your incubator sounds a lot better and easier than one i used. thanks

Thats what i was going to say Chirs can you get a pic with directiongs if you have a chance:) thanks hun

I am old school

I have never had a problem with plastic shoe boxes and damp paper towels.
Cheap and near 97% hatch rate in twenty five years.

But you keep the room a certain temp correct?

X

Only if I'm looking for specific sex in the hatchlings. I'm tellin ya I'm old school. Me and my old buddies used to keep them in the attic. They would hatch much quicker that way. This is the first year since 2000 I 've bred snakes. ( have an ex/gf who didn't like snakes and well... I gave them up) But I usually just keep them in the snake room which stays the same temp within a few degrees. The box itself stays very humid and condensation should be present at all times.

I am going...

to have to try that. its by far the cheapest way i have heard of incubating eggs. How long does it take till the start to hatch?

just paper towels and shoeboxes?

I have talked to a guy in my town who does that, but he uses heat tape too. What do you use as a heat source? Just room temps?

Hey Guys,

I will post pics for you later when i find the cable for the camera. It is basically a Styrofaom cooler with a 10-20 gallon size heat mat (zoo-med) that is plugged into an a-life thermostat. About 5 or 6 inches above the heat mat i put cooling racks that i bought from Wal Mart for about $2. Ofcourse the sealed, slightly damp, containers go on the racks. i cut a square out of the lid and put a peice of plex glass over so i can see in. I will use regular glass next time as the plexy lets some of the heat out. It has enough room for several large egg boxes in it. The real thing i have learned here is that it isnt as complicated as you think (incubating.) They need heat and humidity (key is light fog on lid of egg container) and even that can vary. Unless you live in the artic or the desert you dont need too fancy of a system to make them hatch.
I will post pics later.

thanks Chris, how many egg containers do you have in your home-made incubator at the moment? Do you just have the eggs in Deli cups? Do you have the Deli cups stacked on top of each other? How often do you have to re-wet the eggs? Thanks again sorry about all the question.

Well,

Dirty- If you're asking how long it takes till hatching by my method, 2 months give or take a day. If you're asking about placing them in the attic, about a month and a half, sex varied. But this is important: Keep an eye on them. They must be misted everyday. Sometimes move to the part of the attic where it is the coolest. Sounds funny, but to much heat will destroy as well.
X- the eggs sit atop some of the cages. I have a 55gallon tank, and 2tens and 5and a half on the bottom. They have their own heat lamps. It stays about 88-91 during the course of the day, 85 at night.

Sorry Scotts

didn't mean to be rude and not answer you. Ya, room temps are good. The only time I'm concerned with temps are when I'm looking to control the sex of the offspring. The temps are good enough for incubation in the snake room. Here is a fresh pic for ya. If you look close, you can see the Blooded peeking out in the center tank. The Sunglow is in the 55 above.
