visual reference for feeder size differences?

BOO!

New member
I was wondering if anyone has ever seen a photo or drawing of the feeder animals at their different ages...pinkies, fuzzies, etc, along with something to get a good idea of size (like a ruler, or coin)? I know that there can be size variations among feeders of the same age, but even so, it would be helpful to see what's coming next. I suppose I could just go into the store and ask to see the mice, but they're all frozen and probably bunched together.
The reason this came to mind, is that I think newborn pinkies are now too small for my snake. I don't really see a bump after he feeds (a little bit vertically, but nothing across). Tonight I put two pinkies in the container, and he took one, but left the other. I'm not sure if he'd had enough or just didn't know that there was another in there. I wondered if I should get him something a bit bigger...or maybe just keep him in the container longer (I didn't put the lid on, and he just crawled out into his viv).

Hey!!! I've got just the picture for ya. We originally took the picture for my power-point presentation, "Cornsnakes as Pets". :)

A rule of thumb that I was told (not sure how true this is...so if there is anyone out there to correct me...please do),is that you shouldnt feed a snake a food source that is 1 1/2 times wider than its head.
If you're snakes head is 1cm in width, them maximum you should feed is a width of 1.5 cm..

As for your snake not eating the second pinky,im sure if it was hungr,it would have, snakes have an EXTREMELY advanced sense of smell...and I'm sure that it would have "smelt" it.

That's what I've been told. There lies my inexperience regarding moving to the next size up...the day-old pinkies are the same width as Nib's head. It looks like a huge mouthful to me, but I wonder if it's enough since after it's down the hatch there's not much sign the snake has fed.
Um, on another note...what's the rule for snakes with TWO heads??! (love your avatar!..is that for real?)

erm, I believe the rule is 1 1/2 times the width of the body, not the head
Yup! Lil I agree with you I've been told 1 1/2 times the body. susan

Also with the apropriate food size calculating, is it the length of the rodent (minus tail) to the width of the snake, or the width of the rodent to the width of the snake?

Width to width.
