okay, quick question to those of you that have cats, dogs, w/e. lately ive noticed little scabs all over my 11 year old cat's neck. i didnt think much of it untill i started noticing her scratching her neck a lot more then usual. just now she's laying on a small wooden table and after she scratched i noticed theres little white round things, and tiny black things all over the table and the carpet. could this possibly be fleas? if so whats a good way to get rid of them?

Sounds like fleas to me! And flea-allergy dermatitis. Flea-allergy dermatitis is caused by an allergic reaction to a flea's saliva. Those little black things are flea dirt, and the other white things are probably eggs.

You need to get a good monthly topical medication like frontline. Don't buy anything from the store, as these medications are known to cause severe allergic reactions in cats and they rarely work effectively. Better call your vet and ask for suggestions on a good monthly topical.

I agree, probably fleas. If the white things kinda are tear drop shaped, it is most likely tapeworms. They are caused by fleas and crawl out of the cat's anus. The vet can prescribe something like droncit to get rid of it.

Good luck

well right now we used some stuff on the back of her neck, and she's being kept in the basement. i guess we'll see if things improve

Try brushing your cat over a piece of white paper. Collect all the black things into a pile and add a little water, gently rub with your finger and look at it. Is it red?..The black things off fleas is dried up blood and this will hydrate it again...A little trick to identify fleas...

It's most likely fleas.
Stay away from the store bought stuff - go to your vet and get Advantage or equivalent. It works wonders. Get worm stuff from your vet too, I've tried the over the counter worm stuff and it doesn't work. The vet will need the weight of your cat to give proper dosage.

I also highly highly suggest you rent one of those carpet steamers. Do not use the shampoo in rooms that have herps though, just hot water in the steamer for those rooms. What you want to do is try and kill and suck up all the flea eggs and larvae that are in your carpet.

Every now and then I get fleas - brought in by people who have fleas - but generally I'm flea free because every time I spot a flea on my cats, I use that advantage stuff and go over every square inch of carpet with a carpet steamer. It's been over a year since my last flea infestation happened.

yep fleas are a drag because unfortunatley most people think they can just treat their pet, when in reality, there are flea eggs just WAITING to hatch in every nook and cranny of their house!

so in conjunction with Advantage (and like others have said, NOT store bought flea-drops) you need to irradicate all the fleas/flea eggs that're in your house.
