Hello from snowy Saskatchewan

Hi all!!!!!! I just finally got my validation and had to post something. Well I finally did it I adopted my first corn snake on Sunday. While I am no stranger to snakes this is my corn snake and first snake I've had since I was a kid living at home. I have worked with corns and absolutely love them!!!!!

The one I brought home is a regular I am unsure as to sex but I'd lean toards female as it was one of the biggest in the clutch and one of the most vibrant. My corn is about 4 months old (I'm guessing it might even be younger its a pet store baby) and is eating large pinks. I brought the snake home on Sunday while my daughter was at her grandpa's and have it in a looked room as she talked my wife into a snake for Christmas, she has no idea.

I wanted it hime this early so it had time to settle into the vibrations of the house before Christmas day. This also gives me time to observe the snake and see how it eats (great feeding response I fed it on Wednesday and it gave a spectacular hissing strike taking the pinkie right out of the tweezers). Both of my children had previously handled this particular snake even my two year old so we figured its the one.

I for one think the normal morphs are some of the prettiest, its tough to beat Mother Nature IMHO. Will post pics soon after I see the snake poop.

How awesome that you're getting your children a snake for Christmas!! Wow, I wish I'd grown up with a Santa like you! My guys are 5 and 6 and absolutely adore my small collection. They are great with them and I think snakes make the perfect pet, personally. Maybe I'm biased, tho.

I love the "normals" as well. Their colors are just so warm and velvety looking. We're looking forward to seeing your photos. Are you going to put ribbons and bows on his viv for Christmas morning?

Ok so I'm a loser and have no life my email showed me LBoz had replied so I had too. Yes I was thinking of it I thought it might be kinda neat for the kids and if i'm timing my feeds right they should be able to handle the little thing on Christmas day. I wish I grew up with a Santa like me too, mom wouldn't let my snakes in the house as a kid so my dad and I built a heated shed in the back yard so I can winter my snakes, otherwise I had an outdoor enclosure for my wild caught garters (and there were lots I even built live traps for snakes and mice as I grew up with in a block of the river, for the wild caughts).

Oh please, you'll find that I'm one of the last people here with an actual life outside of my children!

My mom didn't like our snakes in the house growing up either. To be honest, I don't even know what kind they were. We had a huge wood pile, and these guys would come flying out of there and slither all over the yard while we chased them. Thinking of the small amount of knowledge I have now, I'm guessing they were garters since there were so many of them together. They were all black, and larger than me at 7. So I'm guessing at least 4' long. We'd catch them and put them in fish tanks. We'd keep them for a week or so, and wonder why they wouldn't eat the eggs we put in the tank. We'd let them go and then catch some new ones.

Anyway, I'm hoping you can get the schedule right so they can hold him on Christmas day. One breeder member here told me that you can feed them every time they poop, so their schedule really is adjustable. Feed them at least 3-4 days before Christmas and they should be good to go, then you can even wait a few more days. Going a week off or so won't hurt them at all.

I can almost feel your excitement!!! Your kids are going to love him! How's your wife with the new family member?

Welcome to the forum, tommiegunz! I, like you, have a mother who is terrified of snakes. Unfortunately for me, my dad didn't like them either (he isn't afraid of them, though). After leaving home, I lived in Hawaii where you couldn't own snakes. Soooo, I didn't get my first snake until I was 36!!!! Bummer, huh? However, I'm enjoying them now!

She's ummm tolerating, but then again she won't touch the leopard gecko either, I think she indulges me.

I was planning on feeding every 5 days as per the Munson plan, that makes the 23th a feeding day. However if I do every 6 days that makes feeding day th 27th so I think that's what it will be for now. The pinkies I have right now are really big so every 6 should be fine. Actually it should almost be up to two pinkies if i remember the weight right (I weighed it at the store on the digital scale) it was 14 - 15 grams (the snake will remain it until the kiddies name it).

Its nice to have one at home I've been working with corns for two years (I run the pet store I got it from) so they really have captured my eye. Also gives me an advantage I picked a beauty and watched it over the last little while to make sure its a healthy eater, nothing so stressfull as a snake that won't eat.
