Borat (stinkpot) update! (DUW)

Ever Evolving Exotics
My stinkpot turtle is doing really well! I had him in a smallis cage but today it was nice enough to put him in his new home. A 20 gallon long. I decorated it with some nice bricks and a half log hide, a filter and a heater set at 80f. I am on my way out the door to go to home depot and petco/petsmart to buy a new light and bulb. These don't need UVB but UVA is good for them. They stay in the water most of the time and prefer not to bask but I am giving him the option. He got his weekly hopper today too!

No offence but where did you get that info? My Mud turtle has been given a fluorescent tube UVA/UVB light since he hatched and I would not provide anything but that. And as you said they tend to spend more time in the water but they will bask, normally when your not around. Also be sure to keep an eye on him with the gravel, turtles tend to eat gravel. If I use a substrate with my turtles I use river rocks that are too big for them to eat. I've had rescued turtles that pooped out rocks for months.

Katie, I really don't know where I got that info. But I know I heard it. He is a musk turtle though not a mud turtle. I watch him eat BTW and after about half an hour I remove uneaten food.

I know what he is, they are similar species and require the same care. I looked up a couple sites (which I attached below) and all say you should provide UVB.

The gravel eating doesn't have to do with when they are eating, it happens whether or not there is food in the tank. You may not have an issue with the gravel I'm just giving you a heads up to keep an eye out just incase.

Thanks for the links Katie! They will be really useful! Is there a lamp I can buy that has UVA and UVB on it? That would really be nice with my space constraints? And where can I get larger rocks?

I get my river rocks from petsmart (petco probably has them too) and as far as lights I only use ZooMed Reptisun 10.0 for my turtles and lizards. It has 10% UVB and up to 15% UVA. I only use the fluorescent tubes because I've seen too many people have issues with the compact fluorescent bulbs.

This may sound rude but, are they really expensive and do they last any decent amount of time?

He's a cutie! So glad to hear he's doing well.

On the note of UVB, the price depends on what kind and length you need. I think my beardie's last tube, a 24" Reptisun 10.0, was in the range of $30 at Petsmart.. Or something like that. I'm switching all of my UVB-dependent herps to MegaRay mercury vapor bulbs, so I've stopped paying attention to the price of fluorescent bulbs... Lol.

I'd recommend you go for a mercury vapor bulb (they last twice as long, emit MUCH more UVB, emit heat, and are generally better), but I'd imagine the entire bulb would be wasted on a herp that doesn't come out to bask beneath it very often, since it's a spot light type that you would be putting over the basking area.

Anyway, UVB bulbs can be a bit pricey, and they don't have the longest lifespans, but it's a necessary item that you shouldn't be fretting over.

I've never had one die on me but all UV lights have to be replaced every 6-8 months because the UV dies over time. I order mine from LLLReptiles because they are cheaper but I have to buy 12+ of them. If your just buying one it is probably cheaper to buy it at a store. That is the joy of owning UV dependant animals, they are so darn expensive lol.

Thanks for the info guys. I order from LLL quite a bit, next time I will throw in a UVA/UVB bulb and some other turtle-y stuff!!!!!!!!!!

I was looking into using them but after much research there was too many risk involved with thoses bulbs, so I don't recommend the Mercury vapor bulbs and neither does my vet. There have been many issues with them and I just don't think they have been researched enough to be trusted yet.

I've never heard of issues with MVB bulbs... Could you fill me in?

It's been awhile since I was researching them and this is the only one I remember reading on MVB but if I find anymore I'll let you know.

I remember that the articles I read stated that they have been know to cause problems with reptiles and could possibly be a healt risk to us. I also remember reading that the mercury could leak.

What an interesting read. I'm only halfway through--I'll have to finish it tomorrow... Thanks for the link.
