135 degrees??????

Kahn's Mommy
I just finally got some probe thermometers for Kahn and Scottie's tank. I have 4 single probe thermometers, 2 each side of the tank (don't worry, theres a divider for the tank...the snakes aren't together.)

Well Kahn's warm side says 135 degrees! And Scottie's says 127 degrees. Could the themometers be off? The cool sides say 75 and 77. Is it possible for the warm side to be that hot? I felt it and it doesn't feel like it'd be that hot. I have the probe right against the paper lining under the substrate.

I have a 50-60 gallon UTH in the center of the tank. They are in a 55 gallon glass aquarium.

I just turned the thermometers on...maybe it takes them a couple hours to adjust to the correct temps?

I'll update if the thermometers change, it just allerted me.

Do UTH even get that hot??

Yes it is possible. The first time I measured Onyx's temps directly against the glass, it measured 130'. A lamp dimmer from Wal-mart solved that problem.

How much is a lamp dimmer? I just spend my extra $$ this week on the thermometers and a scale to weigh the boys. I'm close to poor until Thursday.

you probly need either a thermostat or a rheostat i would get a zoomed reptitemp 500r its about $45 if the temps are that hot your snakes will probly regurge from the heat

I think i paid $11 for mine at WallyWorld.

Here's an idea on what to look for:

Everyone has their preferences, personally I don't recommend Rheostats or use one as they have to be monitored and adjusted by hand. If the temp gets too hot while you are away or asleep you still face the same problem as you have now. So you are relying on you physically being able to monitor it all the time to adjust the dial manually to make changes.

I think thermostats are the way to go to control nuisance fluctuations or even severe ones like you have, to insure an even consistant temperature.

I have a Johnson Controls A-419, they are the best on the market and have a 1 degree or less differential. I use it in conjunction with a pro-heat panel. Both items are expensive but if you want a full proof system it is the way to go.

This is what The thermostat looks like

Hope this helps

I'm going to attempt to make my own.

If done with lots of electrical tape, is this a fire hazard?

This is my set up:

The dimmer unit thingy (my girlish terminology) will be in the cabinet under the tank (its an aquarium tank and stand). The cabinet has 2 drawers/sides. One side has all my snake supplies/cleaning stuff, and the other side just has their 2 feeding sterilite containers. Will the dimmer unit thingy be safe on the side with the feeding bins? Or do I need to screw it to the wall? Can I place it on the floor of the cabinet?

I'll be able to get a proper thermostat before I go away to school in the fall. This dimmer thing is just for a couple months...which I'll be home to monitor it.

Well I used that link and I made my own rheostate. So far it is a success! I just plugged it in about 45 minutes ago and the temps have gone down from 135 & 140 (scottie's half and kahn's half) to 92 and 98! I know its still a bit warm...but this shows its working!! I'm hoping to get 85-87ish before I go to bed tonight.

What I did on my was to add some marks on the face plate and the round dial to indicate where or how high it was. I use little dots then increase the size of dots to show higher temps and one dot on the dial

If that makes sense.

What I did is to buy the $8 plug in lamp dimmer from Wal-mart. They work just as well, for not much more than you would pay for parts to make one. Plus, unless your house temps fluctuate wildly, they hold the temp within a few degrees. I haven't had to adjust mine in several weeks. Usually what I do need to adjust is the probe placement, when the snake moves it around.

exactly what i did lenny. i used the electrical tape to make a perfect circle on paper, cut it out, marked its centre, tooke off the dimmer nob, slipped on the paper, and put the dimmer knob back on. First i calibrated high, then off...and worked from there.

works awesome.

Success! 83.7 on Scottie's side and 86.3 on Kahn's! I'm sure my boys are much happier now... well as happy as an emotionally lacking animal can be. :crazy02:
