15 DAYS not eating

crazyforcorns

hatchling
I bought my snow in December. He was 2 live pinkies every 2 weeks there. I started him on f/t once a week-10 days, and he'd only eat 1. He wouldn't eat any sooner than that. He still hasn't had a shed. Temps are good. I've brained, just tried a pinky head and tuna scented, still nothing.

His behaviour is the same. He mosey's around his viv in the evening, takes a drink of water, just doesn't want to eat.

He's thinner than my 5 month old females, but itsn't skinny yet.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Kathy

I'll bet he'll snap up live pinks again if you offer them. I know it's a pain, but sometimes you don't have much choice.

That's what I was thinking. I've never fed live pinkies before. I just go to a petstore and ask for 1 live pinkie?

Is that how pple that don't breed their own feeders do it? A trip to the petstore once a week?

Thanks
Kathy

Yep, Ask Mike how much feeder cost him a week. :grin01:
Poor guy, can't walk out of the store without buying another snake. :crazy02:

he definately shows no signs of shedding, he hasn't been in blue since I bought him in December..

Good news though..FINALLY..I found a petstore that had live pinkies in stock. I bought one wee one and gave it to him. At first he reacted to it like it was going to eat him and didn't want anything to do with it. I just covered the feeding tub with a towel and left him for a couple of hours. He ate it. GAWD I was worried sick. He showed no signs of being lethargic for not eating for a month, but an entire month?? He's so little still so I know it isn't the 'love' in the air.

What a pain in the butt! My supplier has live pinkies all the time, but he's a bit of a drive away for one single pinky. I sure hope I can convert him back to frozen.

Anyway, I'm just so relieved that he finally ate.

Thanks for your input!

Kathy

My anery did that recently. He didnt eat for almost 5 weeks, not sure what his issue was. He was never on live. There wasnt any behavior change, neither was he lethargic. He is only 8 months old. But he finally ate, thank god.

I used to worry about my amel because he would only eat live too, and only up to two weeks before his shed, which turns out to about two to three feedings a month. so when he skipped a meal or two the first couple months I would worry he stopped feeding. I keep a notebook on my snakes with notations of dates when they ate and what, refusals, and when they shed. I've been able to track the patterns and it turns out to be the same every month. So I was going out of my mind trying to figure out why he wasn't eating when he had a regular schedule the whole time, his own schedule not mine. He's up to two peach fuzzys now and the last time I snuck a f/t in after the live and he took it with no problems, so the next time I'm going to try two f/ts or if he doesn't take it I'll try a live pink to stimulate, and then the two f/t's...

maybe consider ordering/picking up some lizard scent for your f/t? maybe, even months later, it's time to retrain?

just a thought- maybe a bit cheaper than driving to get live pinks. . ..

I, too, am in the Rep. shop about once a week. Thankfully, I have been able to get little one to eat f/t, but my big ol' boy won't have it.
Sometimes, we just need to do what they tell us to and give them what they want!! Good luck though and hopefully you can convince him to eat f/t! Glad he finally ate for you!!

Maybe he just wanted privacy? :shrugs:

You could try with f/t and cover the feeding tub, never know ;)

Hey Kathy,

Next time you go and get a live pinky from the pet store, ask them for some 'dirty' mouse bedding in a small deli cup. Before feeding live, try a f/t first.....thaw, dry off, roll it in the dirty mouse bedding to pick up the scent, brush off any remaining pieces of bedding, then offer to the 'snow'. Give him the privacy he needs. Check him again in about a half hour.

When I had to convert some 'live only' eaters, I too experienced that 2 of the hatchlings after eating f/t for a couple of months went off food. Not wanting to go back to square one, I used this method. It worked for the both of them. For some hatchlings, I think the 'stronger scent' of 'mouse' may be required.

You can always substitute the f/t pinky with the live one you brought home from the store if necessary. Good Luck.

Ruth
