I only have 15 dollars and my mom wont give me money for a cornsnake because she is afraid of snakes and does not want me to have one.

My dad has no problem with me getting a snake but he will not pay for it.

I do not get an allowence so I dont really have a way to make money.

I know it has nothing to do with responsiblity because I take care of 2 hamsters and 2 cats and I do well in school.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get my mom to overcome her fear of snakes so I can get one?

I'd find a way to make some cash on your own. It's going to be a tough sell getting mom to invest in something she fears. :shrugs:

Im thinking of selling my ipod that I bought with the money I got for my birthday to pay for it.
I hope one of my friends will buy it from me.

that would be the irresponsible way of doing things...

collect cans, mow lawns, wash cars, sell lemonade, walk dogs, etc

thats how i had to make money when i was 13...

I used to do that but people would rip me off cause im a kid. I would clean peoples yards for hours, cuting bushes, trees, lawns, ect. and after 5 hours end up with 5 dollars. I gave up on earing money. Id rather just sell some of my stuff.

Remember you are going to need money for feeding the snake. There are many ways to earn money. Tell people you will do the yard work for a certain price instead of just doing it and getting $5.

not to mention selling gift items is foul...
i thought the same thing at first, so i reread it, it said he got money for his present, he then spent that for the ipod, so the ipod was really a indirect gift, and for things like yard work i always set a price before. just selling you stuff off will not work, a corn snake is not somthing that you can just sell off in a year. you will need money to buy food too, and what happens if it needs a vet visit? the snake cant wait for someone to want to buy your PS2 to see the vet. I am sorrry but it would be better if you waited until you got a part time job.

All I need is the money for the snake. My mom is willing to buy the mice as long as she doesnt see them being eaten and my dad is willing to lend me the money for vet vists.

Im going to look for a summer job tommrow.

Does this mean you're getting a 20 gallon tank (or equivalent), under-tank-heater, water bowl, security devices (e.g. tight screen top w/ clips), water dish, feeding tub, etc. for free? I hope you've budgeted for these things, and others I may have missed...

I hate to pose another challenge to your immense 13-year-old intellect, but how does this reply answer my question? What are you saying? Of course you're getting these items for free because you're not stupid? I didn't ask you if you'd thought of these things; I asked if you were getting them for free.

Yeah, but it'll outgrow it when you're 14. Of course, I'm sure you'll have more cash than you'll know what to do with by then, eh? Or will you deny yourself all the other fun things you'll want to buy to properly save up your birthday and Christmas money for a larger enclosure? I'm just hoping to get you to think about these things. What if you get bored with the snake? Will you still feel like spending all your money on it? :shrugs:

I already have a 10 gallon and a 20 gallon. I wont be able to buy most of the things I want to save money for the corn. I will save my bday money and christmas money, and Im going right now to ask my dad if I can get a 10 dollar a week allowence if I do more work around the house. If i get bored of it I wont feel like spending all my money on it, but I will because I wouldnt want it to suffer just because Im a bit bored. Although, I doubt Ill get bored of it. They are just so fun to look at. I was at the petstore today and I was staring at one for like a half hour lol.

Although I'm sure your research will have shown this up ... ... but you do realise that *if* you you do decide to get a corn, it could well be with you into your early 30's?

Corns aren't like hamsters and gerbils ..... properly looked after they are perfectly capable of living for 20+ years.

Look at my sig .... I've owned my oldest one longer than you've been alive!

Just something to bear in mind before you decide to buy one on a whim ......

Yes I have realised that. I thought that would be cool to have a pet that lives that long. Not much can outlive that. If you want something that would outlive that you would buy a tortis... or a tree lol.

.5 hour might be fun. but figure that with feeding and cleaning you spend 2 hours a week, and it lives for 20 years, that will be 4160 times more then you did at the petstore, just because you dont think you will get bored doesnt mean you wont think that in 5 10 or 15 years, you are going through a time in your life when a lot of things change, you will learn to drive, go to high school, get a job, a pet like a corn snake is a really big cometment, i am not saying not to get one, but it is not somthing to be taken lightly. And if you went to a petstore to get its food and you could somehow get adult mice for $1 if it lived 20 years that is over $1000 in food, and that is just one mouse a week!.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to cornsnakekid92 again.
Very well put.

I just bought 7 newborn PINKIES at my local pet store on the way home from work. Cost: $21. That's a dollar more than I paid for my beloved Maria! Filthy rodents.

I'll be honest. I think corn snakes are fairly boring pets. They hide most of the time. Handling loses its novelty fast. I got my first one when I was a year older than you are, and it was cool for a few weeks, and then it was boring. I guess there are people out there whose corns are their pals. I think of it as a hobby, and I love (almost) every minute of this hobby. But I have crazy breeding and collecting goals, and everything I do contributes to that outcome. If I wanted a companion, I'd get a dog-- or even a ferret or something.

Well, you might ask her to visit a reptile store with you. A lot of times people are afraid of things they have no knowledge about. If you take her to a reptile store, she will be able to physically see the corn snakes (the colors/sizes/variety). She probably has an idea that all snakes are scary, and if she actually goes to the store with you, she can see them for herself, see that they really arent scary, and she can talk with the staff members who are likely to be knowledgeable (as long as you go to a reptile store). Have her ask questions and maybe she will feel more comfortable.

If you cant convince her on your own, you might also try and get dad to pursuade her. You said he had no objections to you having a snake, so maybe he could help you convince your mom to at least be more accepting of the idea if not fully changing her mind.

Good Luck!!

Good suggestion, but the only problem is that a lot of snakes ARE scary, at least in terms of behavior. The anerys in a clutch I just hatched are all very mean. If this kid's mother had seen the one that just bit me about 15 times, hissing between each strike, it probably wouldn't ease her mind much. And these evil guys are probably going to the local pet store... ;)
