A Heart Warming Adventure

Two of my breeding corns have had a odd time with regards to breeding.

Her first year resulted in a triple clutch. However only three babies from the first clutch survived (plus one still born) and the two other clutches where all lost. One of the babies had a head deformation, a very small eye and a normal sized eye and he unfortunatley he passed. The two other snakes where 100% healthey and all was well until they went to new owners. The first let her snake escape, the second went to a local reptile shop for holiday sitting and they forgot to feed the snake resulting in its death. So none made it from first year (unless there is a wild Amel corn in the westcountry, UK!)

In the second year, she produced another triple clutch of which all eggs died.

The third year (This Year). Her first clutch was all fertile but when it reached midterm they all died. Her second clutch looked as if all the eggs were covered in snowflakes and hence I didn't have high hopes. However all but one egg survived, they have now hatched and all of the 12 babies (amel, het anery type A) are 100% healthy!

What an odd time. Has anyone else experienced an ordeal like this?

- Just too add, All of the parameters in the incubator were spot on everytime with no power cuts, heat fluctuations etc etc. Both snakes are 100% healthy and good sizes, the male is over 6ft!

I forgot to add.

First year first clutch- 23 eggs
First year second clutch - 18 eggs
First year third clutch - 15 eggs

Second year first clutch - 22 eggs
Second year second clutch - 19 eggs
Second year third clutch 18 eggs

Third year first clutch - 31 eggs!!!!!!
Third year second clutch - 13 eggs

Well first of all, I'm sorry for your bad luck! If you are sure that the incubation temps and humidity were consistant and correct through out the incubation, then this is very unusual.

That one hatchling that hatched deformed made me think there was some genetic mutation being passed on, but one in 100+ isn't much to go on.

As for the triple clutching, the snakes are being kept in separate containers, right? If so then wow! That's impressive! I don't think I've heard of that before, but it probably has happened, but I bet it happened after some one bred again for a second clutch and the second breeding resulted in 2 more clutches after the first was laid.

Were you trying for 2 clutches, or were the snakes never re-introduced after the first clutch?

Interesting story. One more thing, snowflaking on eggs doesn't seem to cause any problems or suggest bad eggs, it just means that the mother had a deficiency of some mineral or vitamin which normally won't cause any problems.

Good luck with the 12 hatchlings, and good job sticking with is after so many failures! I'm glad it payed off for you finally!

All of the parameters were definatley correct and consistent. My incubator is alarmed so if the temp or humidity fluctuates or changes from the set range it sets off an alarm. I also have a power saver module, so if i get a power cut the incubator can run for at least 24 hours without mains. And we have had no none power cuts.

First Year I wasn't even though she was a big girl! Second and third year I have gone for double. My male is just a randy git really. He'd have her all day long if he could!

Had her checked out for deficiencies and all were clear 100% healthy.

haha, okay, then alls well. I wonder what caused that snow flaking then...

I'd like to hear other's opinions on this, but what an interesting few years.
