ok, i have had my ball python for two months now. And he really does not want to feed.
I have tried absolutely everything. Raising temps, humidity, more secure cave, covering with towel, moving the mouse, keeping it still, scenting with chicken broth. You name it i have tried it.....Except one thing..... Live.

Now i know everyone is against live, and so am i. I really don't want to risk injuring my snake and unrequired torture to the mouse. And a post this week has made me want to do this even less. But i am worried sick.

I know they can go long periods of time without eating, especially this time of the year, but seen as he is my first ball python (and i love him alot) i don't want anything to happen to him.

He is in his cave and sticks his head and and 'on the prowl' for food. But when i offer, he is not interested.

I would firstly like poeple's opinion on live food, who have had troublesome snakes and if it really helps and is worth it.
Secondly if its easy to convert him to frozen thawed, or a long process.
And thirdly i have briefly looked for mice or rat bredders for this purpose but cannot find any. Only selling them as pets, is it wise to use mice sold as pets as snake food?

Sorry about the long post, really getting worried now.

Thank you in advance for all replies and help.

Luke

i don't know. i have not weighed him. i dont have any proper scales.
I have some cooking scales if they are ok, i could go and do it now?

He is still drinking, and is not losing alot of weight and going boney though. but i can't help but be worried.

I feed live/stunned black mice to my BP.

She was a horrible feeder when she was young!

I later discovered that if the mouse wasn't dark she wouldn't strike. Or that it had to be completely dark when I fed her.

you may try freshly stunning a live mouse so it twitches still.

or if you have a feeding tub that is secure, put a heating pad under it to keep it warm, place in the feeding item of your choice and leave it covered for a couple hours in a dark quiet place. just be sure the tub is escape proof.

My last to attempts would be live, than to the vet for a force feeding.

Best of luck. It just takes convincing them the mouse is food. But they can be very stubborn!

Just offer him food every 6 days, make sure its warm,,,,if you notice him becoming skinny take him to the vet, was he feeding in the store?

thats the middle, its warmer in the basking spot.

I have been offering, but he really does not respond to it. he even rests his head on it occasionally. I don't know wether to try a live mouse?
