Hi everyone,
I finally got my baby Abbotts from SMR after waiting for about 6mos. I've had her for 10 days and have tried to feed her 3xs every 3-4 days. I've brained them scented them with everything, tried the ivory soap thing, but nothing's worked so far. I even tried an anole. she musks everything.
We had so much trouble getting our first snake to eat, I just hope I'm up to this again. It's so stressful. These little guys are in our hands. I hope I don't mess up. Temps are 82 on the warm side 75 on the cool. Humidity is 57. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :wavey:
 
SLOW DOWN, makesure the snake has plenty of hides, i would leave it alone for a few days the offer again, try after it gets dark, but by offering soo much you are stressing it!
 
Woooaaaaah....not so much. You shouldnt be trying 3 times every 3-4 days. Firstly, when you first got the snake, it would be advisable to have left it alone for around a week to settle in before trying feeding at all. After this, if the snake does still not feed, try once every 4 days or so, by constantly 'pestering' the snake to eat, you are actually stressing it out, making it less likely to actually do the deed. Everyone has given the same advice I am about to write. Let the snake sit in the encloser with water, a couple of hides, good temps, and no human contact. leave him alone for 3 to 5 days to settle in. When this is done, place the snake in a feeding dish around sunset with a pink, and then leave him alone. Check on him the next morning and then put back in his living tank.. Don't handle him for another 48 hours, and then you may pick him up.

But, remember, you can cause a snake to learn not to eat a specific kind of food by constantly offering it when the snake refuses. If a meal is refused you should wait 5 to 7 days (normal feeding schedule) to offer again. don't worry, snakes can go quite a while with out food.
 
No, you guys misunderstood me. I have been waiting 3-4 days. Not 3xs every 3-4 days. I guess I was'nt clear enough, and I did wait 3 days before holding or trying to feed. :wavey:
 
keep it up...........what everyone has said is the best advice (and paul/pcar actually knows quite a bit). 1st of all, if you will follow these directions the snake will be sure to eat as they get hungry just like everyone else. maybe not right now, but enough refusals and he will be starving. 2nd, Don/SMR (and most reputable breeders) only sell snakes that have eaten usually from 3-5 times before they allow them "out the door". So your snake will eat, it's just either still getting used to the move, or is stressed out right now.

on a side note...............please post pics when you get a chance. don has some of the best stock in the country and you will have one of the nicer looking snakes on the block.
 
Have you tried Live at all? That would be the next step if you haven't. If you have then continue below.

Do you sit there and watch the snake eat? Do you feed him in an area that is well lite with a lot of traffic?

Somes snakes won't eat if the above is true. You might want to put him in his feeding dish at dusk, and leave him in there with the mouse till morning. do this with both live and F/T. most of the time this works.
 
Thankyou for the advice. Live pinkies was my next step. I'm just going to wait a few more days without disturbing her at all. I'll keep you updated. :wavey:
 
hey i have a picky eater and find the best way is to put her in a really small tub with the food item. she will feel more secure in a small tub put her somewhere dark and not cold and leave her for a bit. the other guys are right tho, she must be settled.

Well, on a whim I decided to try new pinkies. I went to a different petshop and bought 3 pinkies. Sure enough she ate one down within minutes! I'm so excited. It's good to know what the problem is. Now she can start to develop into the beautiful snake I know she's going to be. :wavey:
