Alternate Types of Substrate?

I have to admit, the aspen bedding isn't the most appealing to me.

I was wondering if there were a safe to use substitute that looks more like small smooth pebbles? The idea is that it would look more flat and smooth on top, have a visually appealing light "earthy" colour and a corn could still burrow if they wanted. I suppose sand would just be messy, and with all that dust flying around I'm sure it can't be healthy.

Let me know what you think.
 
i dont have an answer for you but i would, like to ask a question, right now i have 4 dragons and a corn, with expectations of getting another corn next month, is newpaper substrate going to always work??or should i switch over to something else?? i like newspaper because its a joke to clean and i can keep the reptile smell to a minimum with the easy changing of newspaper!!
 
hey man wanna send me a pic of your charcol?? i am torn between getting a striped motley or posible a ghost, i want a double het so i can get lotsa different babies in a few years down the road.
 
Well is you have a corn that's adult sized it'll soak through the newspaper hardcore - you'd need to slap down a whole fricken paper to stop that monster leakage - and it's not the most appealing... But I don't see why it couldn't work indefinitely.

Aspen is easy to clean too, just scoop and toss. It looks better, and the snakes love to burrow in it.
 
The processed wood-fiber products like CareFresh or SoftSorbant are good alternatives, but they are very absorbant. CareFresh is dark grey, with big particles and not that attractive. SoftSorbant is a neutral tan and is in small spheres. It isn't great for holding tunnels, but is very easy to clean - just tends to be a bit dusty so we put it in a sieve and shake out the dust before using it for snakes. I use it for hatchlings once they are eating fuzzies (they are on papertowel when still feeding on pinks). It is relatively expensive, but a good option. One caution - we have had problems using these wood product beddings with heat lamps - tend to be too drying and can have problem sheds. We now use them in racks where we have undertank heating.
