Amel Shedding Question

Hi everyone,

This is my first post, as I got my first corn, Amel named Redd, on Saturday and joined that night.

This may seem like a really dumb question, but I was wondering how you tell when an amel is getting ready to shed? I've seen other snakes (ball pythons) eyes when they're getting set to shed, but how do the amels red/pink eyes look when shedding is close?

I've already read a lot and have learned a lot from this site and everyone seems great.

Thanks a bunch,

Kirstyn

well, u can definitly tell when their shed is getting close because their colors turn dusty and don't stand out as much. Your little guy (nice one there ^^) will probably shed alot because he is so small. In no time you will see what it looks like:) you can tell hes just a little baby cuz baby snakes usually need to grow into their eyes ^^ good luck!

Usually, if you catch it at the right time, you'll see them go into the blue stage. Even with the red eyes, it's pretty obvious. I have an amel too, and you can tell.

Thank you both for replying so quickly!

I'm not sure how old Redd is...next time I go in I'll ask...He is tiny though and very active.

I'm assuming that since his eyes are very red right now, we're not ready to shed yet and I'm wondering if he's shed before? How small are they "at birth"?

One more question, with many more to come I'm sure!

What do the 0.1, 1.1, etc. in your signatures mean?

I've seen them in quite a few signatures but have no idea what they mean!

Thanks again,

Kirstyn

the numbers and periods mean how many they have of what sex....1.0 means one male, 0.1 is one female, and 0.0.1 means on unsexed. change numbers accordingly to how many of what sex and type you have. :)

I'm sure your amel has shed before. Hatchlings shed just after pipping, and if yours was kept for any length of time, I'm sure has shed several times. Your Redd is so cute! Here's my amel C.S. She's a year old, and 33" long. She is my fast grower.....only fed once a week too. Don't know how that happened! :)

I can usually tell when my amel is ready to shed. Definitely by the eyes, they still go very blue/cloudy. But also, I can tell by the sheen or dullness on the skin on top of his head. That always tips me off first. Also, he keeps a pretty regular schedule. He is not quite one year (32 inches) and he sheds almost exactly every six weeks.

LuvzWDW, I agree with what everyone has said up top on this subject. I have a snow and his eyes are red, when it comes to shedding the eyes get a thick white transparent look to them, not blue but white. And of course the colour of your snake will get a little dull.

Thanks a bunch to everyone for their replies. This is my first experience with snakes other than looking at them through glass so its all new.

We actually have two snakes in our house now, I got my 9 year old a 7 month old Ball Python named Stryker 8 days ago and then decided that I wanted a snake of my own and decided to get Redd because of his beautiful coloring (they had 5 amels at Tribal Reptile, where we got Stryker and Redd, but I loved his coloring and patterning). I'm sure I'll be learning a lot about corns, balls and snakes in general now. I never quite realized how beautiful snakes really are until now!

So I will watch for Redd's eyes to cloud and his color to dull.

Rio, C.S. , Maya and Yoshi are all beautiful!!!

Okay another question, about how much do these guys grow between sheds and what is a normal size for a one year old male? Right now, Redd is 11.5", don't know how old he is though. I guess I should order the Corn Snake Manual, huh? :)

Thanks again for answering my questions!

Kirstyn
Let's see if I do this right before I make it my signature!

1.0 Ball Python 'Stryker'
1.0 Amel Corn 'Redd'

HeHe, my little amel is also called red (fancy thats two babies called the same). When he shed last week i had to ask aswell, but the way i knew he was shedding was he is noramlly very active, hence he became very quiet his eyes went pale so did his skin, must say he did a lovely shed including eye sockets.

Jane,

That is so cute, two Red(d)s! :wavey:

So you noticed his activity level changing right before the shed as well, I'll have to keep an eye/ear out for that as well cause he is pretty active.

Thanks a bunch...

Kirstyn

1.0 Ball Python 'Stryker'
1.0 Amel Corn 'Redd'

Being a younger snake he might grow 1inch with every shed. When they get to be 2 yrs or more they dont shed as often. My male snow is 4 1/2 feet and hes only 2 yrs old. When he was a baby I feed him often and he bulked right up. Now I only feed him every 2nd week, 2 adult mice.

There is no doubt you will recognise when a shed is approaching, My snake sits in her water dish about three days before she goes dusky coloured.... it is alarming the first time you see them so pale and sad looking. I have attached a photo of Mayzee mid shed...

Yeah, you can definetly tell.

After the snake goes all blue, it will get clear again (though it won't be as vibrant as usual...the red scales will seem to have dull borders) then a day or two later, the snake will shed and amaze you with it's beauty.

Mines eyes turn a slight purple-ish colour. It's really obvious, I have had my corn since 19 April and she has shed twice.

Hi all,

Thank you all so much for helping me out.

I'll definitely keep an eye for Redd's eyes to change and for him to get dull.

I actually got a second corn on Tuesday, her name is Peaches and she's a Snow Corn and a very pretty color, although she blends in with the Aspen a little easily! I'd post a pic but I haven't taken any good ones yet!

Thanks a bunch and I know I'll be posting more questions as time goes by.

Ok my corn named Pyro has shedded. I know that as a fact because the other day his eyes were hazy and his skin was dull and today his eyes have cleared. So I have searched his cage for the skin and the weird thing is that I havent found it. I did a thuro search through his cage and sill I havent found it. Is it possible that snakes can eat their skin? My Pyro has sheded twice before and it has never been eaten. :shrugs: Thankyou.:dancer:
