aspen substrate

hi i have been looking round for a cheap substrate for my corn and have found an 11 litre bag of aspen for £5.25 i was wondering if this is a good price or not.

I buy kilo bags at around £3 each. I use one bag per tank and I have two snakes that are on aspen; but I do make the bedding pretty thick. So it works out around £6 per clean-out. If a 11 litres is more or equivalent to 2 kilos, therefore, that sounds pretty reasonable, but I can't convert it for you; my maths is terrible. :grin01:

If you want a REALLY cheap substrate, you can use paper towels or newspaper. But if you want aesthetics too then aspen's probably your best bet.

That seems to be QUITE expensive.

I get a big 4 cubic foot bag (113 liters) from the local feed store for $12 or about £6

Well I can understand aspen bedding being more expensive if you can only get the small bags marketed for the reptile industry. They sell those here as well, at a similar markup in price and without the excuse of having to import it.

Isn't there some other type of hardwood shavings or bedding from a more local variety of wood? What is used for small animals and rodents?

Cypress mulch is much cheaper than aspen here in the US (at least if you get your aspen at pet stores). A 2 cubic foot bag of cypress costs about $3 here. I don't know a thing about conversion of money here, but it'd be worth looking into at least.
