Average rat litter

I know there's some rat breeders on here instead of just mouse breeders. Does anybody know what the average rat litter is? I just got 1.3 rats, do you think that would be enough to feed 9 snakes?

I did some reading just now and learned that a rat's first litter is usually a little smaller, but most of the time they average around 12 pups. Obviously they will vary due to conditions and food type and availability.

I have a 1.2 colony and am keeping two babies now to expand to a 1.4 colony for my 9 snakes. I have only had 3 litters and one about to drop but one femal had 11 then 9 babies and the other famle had 10 and looks really big now so I expect i nice litter soon.

Wow funny I went to check on the rats after posting and the second mom about to drop. Just had her litter. Couldn't have been more than 10 hours ago. I can't count the babies yet because the moms kinda freaked out and started moving babies when I peered in. Ill check them tommorow.

You can guess about 10 pups every 4 weeks from each female. You may get more that will be a good average.

Rat Breeders

We have quite a few breeders. With good moms and not so great moms. The awesome thing about rats is that I always have a female willing to take someone esle's babies if the mom doesn't want them. Mine have anywhere from 10 to 20 a piece. It really just depends on the female. Also I have a couple of females that only have 7 or 8 babies, but they are absolutely awesome moms. They produce huge babies that grow really well since they don't have to fight for food.

I couldn't even imagine 20 rat babies in 1 pile, that is crazy. I got mine from a local pet shop, and we know the owner pretty well so we got 1.3 of his good breeders.
