Baby Corn too little for fuzzies but still hungry

Hi

We have had our new baby Anery Corn for 10 days now. She is happily taking 2 pinkies, every feed, every 4 days. We are following the regime she had the shop we bought her from and at the suggestion of the guy in the shop, started her on 2 pinkies at a time from her first feed with us.

The only problem we have, is that she appears to be STILL hungry even after 2 and is hunting around for more straight after eating the second pinky. She ate both at the last feeding within 6 minutes of us placing them in the faunarium. She even starts looking for food the night before she is due to feed. We believe she is still too little to take a fuzzy. Should we feed her 3 pinkies instead?

Like I said, this is the only problem we have. Other than that she seems to be a very happy, contented little snake. Who is extremely confident, especially considering she had never been handled before she came to us!

Hope someone can help!!!

(Our little corn has not yet been sexed, but as she is my stepdaughters, she felt that she should be referred to as one or the other!)

are the pinks leaving a lump still? if they aren't she can take a small fuzzy.

She is more than likely still in "feed mode" and thinks "hey i found two, there could be another somewhere" its natural instinct for them to continue to look to see if there are more food items... in the wild they will eat as many as they can because they don't know when their next meal is.

I wouldn't feed anymore.
snakes go into hunting mode after eating, and even when my 9 month old eats his Hopper he still looks around for more. This dose not mean their hungry just hunting. in the wild snakes don't know when they will come arose their next meal so when they do find something they tend to gorge themselves. But In captivity we are incharge of everything, and know that their next meal is coming.
no need to feed more, just ignore the behavior and they'll settle down eventually

but 2 pinkys every 4 days seems a bit to aggressive for my liking.. and could lead to weight issues down the road. I'm pretty sure that when Sirius was on double pinks I fed him ever 5 or 6 days.. and he's growing steadily.

this is just MHO though, I hope this helps!

I also don't think 2 pinkies/4 years is a good diet. I feed one pinkie every ~6 days for my yearling.

One pinkie every 6 days for a yearling seems like way too little. How much does your yearling weigh? My yearlings are on hopper mice with one that is still on fuzzies.

To the OP... it sounds like your little one is still in hunting mode after eating. I agree with most that 2 pinkies every 4 days is a bit much. I would stretch it to 5 days.

I'd like to know how much the snake weighs, and how much the two pinkies together weigh before I proffer my opinion.

On both my babies, I keep a record of their weight every other feeding, and weigh the pinkies every feeding. Riker, my first snake (who was AWOL for four months and is back) weighs 17 grams and was eating two pinkies (combined weight 3g) every four days. Now that he's returned, he's going to a five day schedule with the same 3g meal.

B'ellana was originally on a four day schedule, but we've now stretched that to a five day schedule. She weighs 30g, and is eating a meal of almost 4g. It's not going to be long and we're going to put her on a seven day schedule with that same 4-5g meal.

Cheers Guys

Really appreciate the advice... Will have a look into what you suggest and let you know how things go.

Oh, my yearling is extremely little! Was underfed in the shop and I doubt he will ever be a big snake.
I have rehabbed a poor feeder of my own and one for another owner, and am currently rehabbing a new foster snake. Just because yours has had a poor start it will catch up if it gets a proper diet. 1 pinky every 6 days is no good for a catch-up. You need to be giving a big pink every 5 days, IMO.
See my starving to death baby? This is her as a big, healthy adult.

Rather than 3 small pinks, can you find large pinks? If you have a shop where you can root through the bags of pinkies you'll find tiny day-old 'reds' which may weigh less than a gram to 3-4 day olds which are 3-4 g. The big pinks have more nutrition/g than the equivalent weight in reds.

I fed mine 2 pinks every 6-7 days, until she weighed 26g now she's moved onto fuzzies. I've decided to wait until she's 2g into the weight boundary as I've heard this feeding plan (can't remember the name!) is considered by some to fatten snakes too early.

Sorry for double post but I forgot to add - after cleo had her very first fuzzie, which I almost thought she wasn't going to manage (they're huge compared to pinkies!) she returned to the spot where the fuzzie was laying and seemed to sniff around the area and looked like she was searching for another one! Had the biggest meal in her life so far which took her over 10mins to eat and she wanted another. Its just the hunting instinct, there's no way she needed another.
