Bad Clutch

:sobstory: My friends cornsnake layed her first clutch of 8 eggs, but they were all bad. Is this because she was only 22 months old? It also took her 4 weeks to pass them from 1st egg to 8th egg, but the first was as bad as the last.

Hi Kaz. Couple of questions for more info, which will help us give some ideas:

- How big is the female? 22 months is a bit young, but size is the key factor
- Is the male she was mated with, a proven breeder? (By which I mean has he successfully "fathered" good eggs before?)

My female hypomel layed her first clutch 52 weeks ago and the female is only 1 1/2 yrs old she layed a clutch of 8 but only 4 made it. Their pipping as we speak.

:wavey: The female is about 18 ins long, but only 1/2 in dia. She has mated with her 'brother', i.e. a male from the same clutch of eggs, so he is the same age and size, and not mated before. I didn't have them sexed but thought they both looked like females because of the way the tail at the vent quickly tapered.

:wavey: Congrats, but I hope you mean 52 days ago! he, he. 4 out of 8 is quite good for a first go.

Mated with her brother? Great, introduce weak genes into the gene pool.

Is there an issue with mating related snakes?

I have two Rat snakes which came from the same clutch and when they mature, I hope to mate them (hopefully one's male and the other female that is). So some help on this be appreciated.

The weak genes are not introduced this way. They either already exist or not. They can be reinforced by breeding siblings if they do exist, but not created.

Thanks for the extra info Kaz. Sounds like your pair are too small to be successfully (and safely) breeding yet. I'd separate them until they were at least twice the size - don't try to mate them again until they female hits three feet long minimum.

Everyone comfortable with that?
