Ball Python Care

Old World

Hi, im considering purchasing a Ball Python in the next few months, and i just want to learn as much as i can about their husbandry. Ive read a few diff care sheets i found on google.ca, and i read that the hot spot should be around 90 degrees and the cool side around 85. I was wondering how i would achieve this, because the little 4 watt heating pad i use in my corns 10 gallon tank brings the warm side to 80-85 when its turned up fully. Would i have to look for a pad thats more watts or should i use a heat lamp as well as a UTH to bring the hot spot to 90? i live in Canada, so the ambient temp in my room changes according to seasons

thanks

Ball pythons require 80-84 degree cool side, 90-94 degree warm side, plus 50-60% humidity. Of course, there's more to it than that.. but you should be researching anyway.

As for heating/heating control, I got Flexwatt heat tape and Johnsons Control thermostat on Reptile Basics. If you want to go premium, get a Helix thermostat, but the Johnsons/Rancos are good enough. Don't trust a dimmer unless your room temperatures are spot-on 24/7.

I keep mine at around 80F cool, 90F warm side. He alternates well between the warm and cool hide. I only use a heat mat to heat mine, I would think just a mat should be sufficient. Just make sure whatever you use it is regulated by a thermostat.

Ball pythons are pretty easy, but they like it warmer/more humid than corns. :)

As for heat mats, i was looking at a few today. One was reccomended for "desert" type enclosures and had a rating of 8 watts. The other one i looked at was for "rainforest" type enclosures, was the same size but had a rating of 4 watts. What do you think would be best UTH to use for a ball python. thanks
