Ballistic feeding response

Hail_Britannia

Animals > People.
So, this isn't really a problem, more like a curiosity question. Cornwallis's feeding response has been getting more and more insane. He is the sweetest snake ever most of the time; I've never been afraid of getting bitten. However, put him in his feeding box with a dead mouse and he goes NUTS. I don't mean just grabbing and coiling; he'll GRAB the mouse, then proceed to rattle his tail, thrash around like a maniac, bashing the mouse against the sides of the box. Often he thrashes so hard that he'll rip a piece of it off and lose the rest for a while, and I don't mind telling you I sometimes get nervous when I have to use the tongs to help him find it again. Tonight he even struck at the side of the box! I'm delighted he's such a great eater, so I'm not really worried, just curious. Does anyone else have a corn snake that acts this way? I would understand coiling, but I swear it seems like he's trying to shake it to death!

I haven't seem mine thrash around like your saying but if it's eating ...good.

I too feed in a box but I place the mouse in there first then snake, lid and cover the screen top. This...in my mind make the snake search and concentrate on its meal.

my butter motley has his moments. As a matter a fact, thursday he surprised me a bit. He's currently only eating live mice, for some reason. Anyway the mouse was right in the middle of his tank with 'Maru poking his head out on the right side of the tank. Like a shot he came flying out of his cave, grabbed the mouse and slammed it into the left side of the tank, then coiled it up. I dont think I've ever seen him move so fast with his entire body off like a bullet.

It seems like feeding will often times trigger a whole new personality in a snake, it's rather amusing really. Your little corn does sound rather violent, but if he's eating well I guess it's not a bad thing. I've never seen my corn do much more than a quick grab and coil.

my amel doesn't ever coil. she's eating f/t pinkies so she doesn't have too, but she just grabs the mouse and gulps it down. sometimes i wish she had more of a feeding response, but she's eating and healthy and that's all i can ask for.

Cornwallis never coiled when we were feeding pinks, either. He didn't start going nutso until he was eating mice with fur. Maybe your snake will do the same.
