Basic care? Starter guide?

So I'm fed up paying store prices and saw a breeding colony of 1.2 rats free to a good home. I've only 2 adults, but next spring hope to have lots of ickle hatchling mouths to feed. How easy is breeding? How easy is it to euthanise? Is there a basic guide to keeping and breeding rats anywhere?

I don't like using rats for feeders for corn snakes. They grow too big too fast and require much more space. Plus they are so tame that its very hard to use them for feeders. I'd stick to mice or ASFs.

Plus, if you do go with rats I wouldn't get any that are already breeding, they are probably already worn out breeders and might not work out very well.

I was just about to post a similar topic.
Im breeding mice right now and that couldnt be easier, but apparently its a bit harder for rats. Im pretty sure the male has to be big (400-500Grams) and 6 months old where the female is ready at around 3-4. Thats all I know so Im hoping they are in the mood to do it. Mice on the other hand go nuts!

My rats are great. They just keep (excuse the expression) pumping 'em out.

Finding this info is very simple. Google "breeding rats"

I breed rats and mice and must be honest, the rats are far more consistent producers. I'm curious..why would you only have babies in the spring? Rats breed like, well, like RATS all year round here... :)

Rats do grow faster but I think this is an advantage, I only have to wait two weeks for a rat to be the right feeding size as opposed to waiting 3-4 weeks for a mouse to be the right size. :)

I feed newborn rats to my little guys every second meal, they are about the same size as medium mouse fuzzies. :)

The rats are more intelligent though and I never allow the babies to get bigger than large fuzzy size before I cull them off, its just too hard if they are bigger than that.

I think you misinterpreted... I only have 2 snakes but will have lots of baby SNAKES in spring to feed, which is why I was going to breed rats and save up newborn rats for feeding the hatchling snakes in spring. :)

lol Oh yeah! lol Reread your post! lol

Incidentally, my newborn rats (literally a few hours old) are the same size as medium fuzzies so it will be quite a while before little snakes can eat them...lol Mine were 6 months old before they were big enough to eat newborn rats. :)
